You know, a certain type/amount of hazing CAN be a camaraderie building activity. Sadly, there are just too many people who don't know or understand how to NOT go over the line. It seems that they've found better ways for building team chemistry these days with lots of hugs and love and whatnot. I'm sure it's better, but all of the hazing I participated in my youth never amounted to anything worse than a temporary embarrassment, if that. Strangely enough, most of the "hazing" rituals I remember participating in were related to church groups.

I still don't know what that dude's deal was.

Not always, I know people, my brother included, that have been permanently scarred by it. It was traumatic enough that it was at least partly to blame for his alcohol abuse issues that ended up taking his life. I can't speak for your experience in church but of the victims I've known most were middle or high school athletics followed by before or after PE class. Both of these kind of victims were abused in the locker room. Hazing is abuse period and there is no place for it.

Like I said, the “hazing” I was “subjected” to was no worse than good natured ribbing, and it’s sad that many people can’t tell when they’ve crossed the line. Before/after PE class, I’d call bullying, and I can definitely say that I saw bullying behavior before/after middle school PE classes. Hazing is much more of an initiation into a group, and it does not have to be humiliating, abusive, or dangerous.
