But I think we saw a “Pac 12” ref make a phantom call that decided the outcome of the game

In pretty much any other situation, the call was not a terrible one. But the refs had been letting both teams get away with a lot. To see the yellow flag come out there was pretty jarring.
Probably the right call, but probably not the correct call given the situation in the game. Basically sucked all of the fun out of the game and made the game about the call. Plus, I hate it when one of the referees, who can't possibly see the play makes a call that a referee right on top of the play did not make. On top of that, I am almost 100% sure that he did not see the actual hold and was just calling it, because it looked like a hold.
Let 'em play.

The refs inserting themselves into the outcome? Sure seems like it.

Two Super Bowls in a row that a VERY questionable defensive holding call in the 4th quarter has a MAJOR affect on the outcome.

If you asked him he would say that was a hold too. So how do the refs decide when to throw the flag.

Yes. You see more egregious holds go uncalled ALL the time. Guys intentionally hold on plays in every game that they hope/expect not to be called.

I think Caleb Williams earned the Heisman this year because a) his effectiveness and b) because of how similar his game is to Patrick Mahomes in that they are both calm in the pocket and make excellent decisions with the ball even as the pocket collapses.
Hurts also played well and I am not trying to say that Williams' game only resembles that of Mahomes; Hurts has the same pocket presence that you see in Mahomes. But I am trying to say that Williams' pocket presence combined with his other tools make him look like an NFL-caliber QB.

If you asked him he would say that was a hold too. So how do the refs decide when to throw the flag. This is the much more important thing to me. If they’re gonna call a game “tight”, then do it. Don’t wait until a critical point in the game to decide you’re gonna call that. I think that “hold” goes uncalled in a vast majority of games, and certainly had been let go in this game up to that point. That said, I don’t want refs to ignore clear penalties at critical points in the game, either.
