I do not "publicly" post here any more for many reasons. But this topic espouses many of the reasons and a "non-wilky" diatribe is not needed.
"All of the above" ++++ depending on the sport of course. For example... "past history precludes any future success... in winning, recruiting, hiring"; "budget/support precludes any chance of anything other than the current mediocrity"; "who in the world would take the job... again based on history/budget/support"; "who could OSU get that is any better".
I'll add those in/post game analysis comments that are not only played out, but border on paranoid conspiracy outlook... Pac12/TV has it out for OSU... OSU gets screwed by officials in every sport and are typically the cause for losses... Covid, the portal, and NIL effects OSU more than other schools... the number of posts that end up including/focusing on TSDS.
It is funny how many on here (face it, there are not many actual "regular" posters) create their own "expert" delusions and subsequently their own false narratives that then creates disappointment and further expert analysis that is about as meaningful as the original thoughts. Quick examples:
-Recruiting.. it's based on HS play in every sport plus maybe some "all-star" type play. Most evals are from afar and based on comments of comments. Very few have any amount of significant in-person evals. Many times it is against far inferior opponents which will never play D1 ball. In some cases pages are wasted on expert analysis of kids who'll never attend OSU, some as young a 6th graders! Really? Those kids that actually sign and step on the playing surfaces are the ones that matter.
-Ratings... recruiting and those "elite 5*" types are again based on HS play and very few in-person evals, but even more important they are "individual pieces". There is no guarantee a highly rated player will succeed, let alone make a significant impact or fit the style and/or roster construction.
-Coaching... pretty simple, W & L's are the only stat that truly matters and is pretty simple to see that at all levels of sport. The subjective observations ("playing hard", "never giving up", "we're so close") are subjectives that are rarely part of any hiring process. Typical of fans trying to justify a poor W/L record. Of course W &L's are take in accordance with other factors, but you hire a coach to Win... period.
-Improvement... keeping players in the fold and their ultimate improvement is to be a normal expectation. But, as is very evident the same applies at every other school. Other teams have "family" atmospheres, other
I will say with the above as a backdrop the WBB has to be the best example. The "hype" over this top rated class, the disparagement of many that transferred, and the outrage that OSU was not picked higher in the preseason makes all the "expert" coaching tips sort of funny. OSU had a peak and is on a downward trajectory like 95% of all programs success is somewhat cyclical. The expectation that OSU WBB was just going to stay in the top 2 or 3 in the Pac12 was total folly. Other schools were going to improve and get quality players and coaches and some here seem to ignore that fact until the fantastic Frosh did not have such an impact and 3-10/11-14 (11th place) stares you in the face. At one time those here now disparaging Rueck considered him a coaching "gawd" and any slight was subject to an immediate rebuke. Scott "suddenly" is... overbearing, overcoaching, can't build a roster, does not know who to play when, has the wrong personnel in the wrong spots, has poor assistants or no rapport with them. I can say that some of these issues have been mentioned for years and denied by many here now stating them. Weird.
OK... good general topic worth breaking the public posting hiatus. Go Beavs
