Forrester ranked #4 at 1B on the top-50 list Bazzana ranked #9 at 2B on the Top-50 list Catcher rankings = Zip 3B rankings = Zip SS rankings = Zip Top-150 OF rankings = Turley #45 Top-200 Starting Pitcher rankings = Kmatz #103 Relief Pitching = TBA (we should do better). My spin: "we are a young team. Our boys haven't had the opportunity to assert themselves and put their considerable skills on display yet"

Of course, he didn't specify where in the rotation that he would be.

Word on the street! Sellers will go on Saturdays. Sellers taking up a starting spot makes a ton of sense. He was 22-1 with a 2.38 ERA over the last two seasons in NAIA. NAIA All-American and NAIA College World Series All-Tournament. 14-0 last season, including the win to put Lewis & Clark into the Championship Series. He came to Oregon State to start. Who is the ace then? Jaren Hunter? Jacob Kmatz? Someone else?

Who knows with new guys and off season improvement but our most reliable guys that are capable of + innings and nasty pitching are Ferrer and Lattery.

Hunter should be a solid midweek starter.

Kmatz was maybe more consistent, but he looked like he lost a lot of steam at the end of the season. The only pitcher that I can realistically see as the ace besides Hunter and Sellers is Ferrer. Unless Kmatz or Lattery has taken a huge step forward from last year, I personally don't see either as a viable ace.

Kmatz essentially had to fill the role of #2 pitcher when Pfennings went down..... as a true freshman, he went 8-2 with 4.19 era....Im sure he wore down as the season went on. I expect him to come back stronger with the experience He gained. Hes got the size, the pedigree, and now the experience, and he has some pop. Hunter came on for sure but he 2-2 with a 3.97 era. He just doesn't scream ace to me. He's got some nice pitches, and a lot of movement, which created some swing and miss As for Ferrer, I think the staff will do what they can to keep him in the pen.....or maybe not....he was arguably better than Hjerpe last season! His stats are incredible. Like I've said already, I think if guys like Lattery, Hunter, Kmatz, Sellers can look like they are starting rotation material, Ferrer anchors the pen......if a couple guys aren't ready, maybe Ferrer is in the rotation. Its all speculation at this point

In ranking the Top-50 Relievers today, D1 Baseball had this to say.
Ferrer is the 6th best Relief Pitcher in college baseball'
Brown is the 21st best Reliever in college ball.
So, to sum it all up, the Beav's have six players that received national recognition from D1Baseball.com:
Forrester, Bazzana, Turley, Kmatz, Ferrer, and Brown.

Its all speculation at this point Hunter had the one bad start against Gonzaga. But Hunter gave up two or fewer earned runs in 10 of 13 appearances. Kmatz gave up two or fewer runs in 8 of his 16 appearances. And all eight of those occurred before May Day. After May started, Kmatz gave up at least three runs in his final five starts. On the other hand, Hunter only gave up three runs once in his final seven appearances (six in May) and that was only because Townsend gave up two singles and a double to score Hunter's runner and turn a 2-2 game into a 6-2 deficit. Oregon State pulled a 2018 College World Series-style come back and crushed Washington 13-8. In his final five starts, Kmatz left with the score tied 3-3 against Oregon, down 4-1 against Arizona (loss), tied 4-4 against UCLA, up 5-3 against UCLA (Justin Thorsteinson gave up four earned runs in 0.2 innings), and down 5-0 against Vanderbilt (loss). In his final seven appearances, Hunter left up 3-0 (Hunter did not go five innings, so Verburg pitcked up the win) against Oregon, 0-0 against Oregon, up 2-0 against Portland (win), 2-2 against Washington, down 5-4 against Stanford in the Pac-12 Championship Game (Verburg started and gave up three earned runs in his inning), down 2-1 against Vandy, and down 2-1 against Auburn (loss). I also think that Hunter had relievers blow three potential wins for him in March and did not get another win despite posting a 9-2 lead, because Hunter was pulled before completing the fifth. If Kmatz can pitch into June like he pitched in February, March, and April last year, I am all for Kmatz being the ace. It might be wiser, though, to use him more sparingly to save him for June. We'll see, I suppose.

We'll see, I suppose. One thing to consider, Hunter was mostly a midweek starter. There's a difference in competition being in the weekend rotation vs. midweek, and non conf games, against lesser teams. All I'm saying is, for much of the season, Kmatz was in a higher pressure spot on the staff. He was given that spot when Pfennings went down. They gave it to him for a reason. At the end of the day I think we are splitting hairs here. Hopefully both kids come into this season as stalwarts on the staff. We kinda need em to be, if we are gonna make some noise.

Also keep in mind it is a long season for those Freshman. By the sophmore year they have another year of physical growth and the mental understanding of how long the season is in College.
Looking forward to it... just a week from now we will get to see with our own eyes the work these guys have put in over the winter and learn the new faces!
