There's been some hand-wringing about players bailing in the transfer portal. I don't think there's going to be a mass exodus. It might be touch and go if the team really bottoms out now, but I don't think that will happen. I'm actually looking forward to what the team could look like next season. First, there will be the addition of Shuler at the point. I don't know if she's going to be ready right away, so I'm hoping Rueck will be able to land a point in the portal. So I'm expecting some more consistency out of the position and a lift for the offense when it comes to better ball distribution. It will also be interesting to see where Hunter fits in. Beers will have a year under her belt and she already is playing at a pretty high level. She's already an established scorer and is the best rebounder on the team (big edge over Mit because she's a much better on the offensive boards). She needs to avoid foul trouble. Gardiner should benefit greatly from being healthy throughout the offseason. IMO she can become a fantastic offensive player with some sharpening of her game. She needs quite a bit of work on the defensive end. TVO should thrive with a true point guard on the floor. That's been a major stumbling block for her and I believe it will enable her to find her true role. Hansford needs more court time to get going, but at some point that 3-point shooting ability will come through. Blacklock, well, I think she can become a fan favorite. I think she has the potential to be a really good player. I haven't seen a lot of her on the court but she obviously understands what is going on out there and immediately knows how to react. If Mit is even as good as she is right now, she'll be fine. Hopefully we can see improvement from the rest of the roster as well. Overall, I think the team can be much better and should be improved right away with better point guard play.

That is encouraging coming from a well respected source!
You did not mention A.J.. I thought that she would be excellent because of her quickness, jumping ability, etc. However it does not seem to have translated into good court performance for the most part.
What is your view on her situation/potential/etc.?
Thank you!

Marotte's kind of a tough one to gauge. Her play has tailed off in the second half of the season. I like her midrange game and she seems to have decent overall skills but I'm not sure if she's played all that well on defense. She moves and shoots like a player who could become very effective but right now I just think she's been too inconsistent.

In conference play AJ's stat's have all improved, defensive and offensive, except for FT shooting, which has taken a hard dive.

She averaged 9.73 points a game in nonconference and is at 5.3 in the Pac-12. She had two games of 9 points and 10, 15, 16, 16 and 18 vs. nonconference opponents. She had 17 points against Arizona and two more 9 point games. That's pretty significant.

When Bendu came in everyone struggled for a few games especially AJ and Talia. Now with Timea in the lineup there are less opportunities for Talia and AJ. I believe AJ struggles with the over-coaching style of Scott. When she gets moments to just play on instinct (Arizona) that's when we see the AJ we are fans of. Not only do I believe she will transfer; I think its in her best interest to do so. You hate to see a thoroughbred locked in a cage.

Your statement summarizes I believe a significant root cause of the SR program over the past few years. For the most part, I believe that (a) the most talented players are not interested in attending OSU or (b) once they are here they do not want to play in such a rigid and controlling situation. In the past with no portal and the punitive nature of transferring (sitting out a full year) once they were here they stayed because of that situation. Now they are out the door quickly.
Thank you for your post.

What a waste of a fundamentally good, athletic player with exceptional potential. Talk about lack of focus on a player and their development. This IMO is a good example of that. Irritating!

I was talking about from season to season. She's played two seasons and statistically her nonconference play has been better in both. She averaged six points in nonconference as a freshman and 3.93 in the Pac-12. Maybe her rebounds got slightly better, she did have three 3-rebound games in the Pac-12 part of the schedule. She did average 15.67 minutes a game in Pac-12 games as a freshman and it goes up to 16.71 if you take out a 1-minute game against UA, which is an anomaly (maybe she was hurt or sick, I can't remember). The bottom line is she was getting a chunk of minutes. Her offensive output has improved this season. My guess is that Rueck is not always happy with her defense.

I just looked at AJs minutes per game so far this year, non-conference and conference. Non-conference = 25; conference = 16. So conference is less, but she played only 8 and 9 minutes during the USC, UCLA trip, and did not play at Stanford and Cal because her foot was in a boot. I think I may have been wrong about AJ being overlooked by SR, and now think that she is dealing with some type of ongoing aggravation, perhaps an inflamed AC or something like that. I continue to be a fan of AJs style of basketball and her skills, and think that this aggravation is having an impact on her game. Go Beavs!
