Imagine playing for a chance to get to the Super Bowl, and you don't have anybody on the roster remaining that can throw a pass longer than a screen (and one of them was wetting his pants catching the snap anyway before getting concussed). SF didn't even try wildcat, and I'm guessing because its either wasn't likely to be that fruitful, or SF didn't have a RB that knew enough play variety to run it for any length of time.
IMO, Jack would have given them still a punchers chance at making it a game. At minimum, it would have been far less embarrassing and damaging to the front office in the eyes of the team and fans.

When Purdy went down SF had no chance doesn't matter if they ran the wildcat, had Colleto, etc...

McCaffrey threw a 50-yard touchdown pass in 2018 and a 34-yard touchdown pass to Brandon Aiyuk at the end of October.
Kyle Juszczyk is supposedly the 49ers emergency quarterback, but he has not thrown a pass since at least high school. McCaffrey may be the actual emergency quarterback, since he has taken snaps in shotgun before.
Jerrick McKinnon was the 49ers' emergency quarterback until the Chiefs signed him in free agency in 2021. McKinnon was a part-time FCS quarterback.
Johnny Hekker is often bandied about as one of the best emergency quarterbacks in the game.
To really have no real emergency quarterback is kind of crazy in a win or go home situation.

Sounds like Jack might be helping Jack's draft value!

I believe the Bengals actually elevated Jake Browning as their 3rd QB for the AFCCG.
During the regular season, I can see keeping an extra roster spot for ST guys, but for the post-season, it might be important to actually be able to run an offense.
As for Colletto, I think it helps a lot that he was a hybrid FB/TE, because I'm not exactly sure what % of NFL teams currently roster FBs, or how many snaps those guys get.
One thing he does have going for him is that he's spent plenty of time on special teams as well. TE/FB/ST/3rd QB might actually get you on a roster as a reserve player.

The Bengals put Jake Browning on the roster to close out the year, but he was a healthy scratch for the AFC Championship Game. Reading about the 49ers' situation, the 49ers' official third quarterback was Jimmy Garappolo, who was hurt. It is unreal that the 49ers did not have a third starter and no real emergency quarterback. The 49ers were playing with fire and got burnt.

Im guessing they knew they were toast if Purdy went down anyway.

49ers should have at least had a QB on the Practice Squad that could be called up for post season.

49ers should have at least had a QB on the Practice Squad that could be called up for post season. I think they had been hoping Jimmy G would be back for NFCCG or Super Bowl, and probably didn't want to go through all it would take to get another guy up to speed when they thought Jimmy might be back. Now that it's been revealed that Purdy tore his UCL, the option to unload both Lance and Jimmy is gone.

If his football career takes off Colletto should do a commercial for Jack in the Box.
"Hi, Jack Hammerburger here...."

They hoped that Jimmy G would be back to close to 100% in case of an emergency, but Jimmy G was not as far along as hoped.

49ers should have at least had a QB on the Practice Squad that could be called up for post season. Josh Johnson has been on the 49ers since well before the playoffs...and played for the 49ers in 2020 and 2021. The 49ers were done when Purdy went down. They knew they were done, and they went in to the game knowing they would be done if that were to happen. They are playing the NFLs #1 scoring offense (by 8 pts) on the road, and the NFLs #2 defense...in their crib. The goal is to get to the superbowl. There was really no reason to carry a #3QB. At that point your just praying to leave Philly with no major injuries. The 49ers are in good shape to win it all next year barring injury...and should get some decent draft capital dumping 2 QBs.

I really don’t know if anyone is going to be willing to give up anything substantial for Trey Lance. What has he shown that would make an NFL team think he’s a front line starter?
