Great effort at Stanford last night. Lots of talk about rosters across the Pac-12 being loaded in various ways (bigs/guards/3pt shooters).
Put this on recruiting board b/c I wanted to include the commits in the conversation.
Looking at next year's two commits - Kennedie (listed as PG) and Donovyn (listed as wing/forward). I wasn't easily able to determine their "rankings". What positions might they play when they arrive? How early might either of them get significant play time (like RB or TG)?
My read on next year's roster: Senior and leaving: Bendu Jr and coming back: Noelle and Lex So and coming back: Talia, AJ and Jelena Freshman coming back: Raegan and Timea Uncertain of return: Marta, Adlee, and Lily
We've watched a veteran guard take 10+ games to learn PG and she's graduating. We already know that Talia isn't best suited for full time PG duties. There are lots of fans for Marta and a few for Noelle. Who really is the target for PG duties? Even if one is found in the portal.... learning the system seems to be challenging. Maybe because the rest of the roster would be "veterans" if they all return that would make learning the system easier. Not sure.
So what are your thoughts about immediate impacts of Kennedie and Donovyn? And what is your best guess on how to tackle the PG situation?

I'd say Hunter and Shuler are both combo guards. Watched a lot of Hunter playing with Cal Stars on the EYBL circuit and she's a very, very good passer. She led both of the tournaments in assists and there were some really good point guards in those. We'll see if she's quick enough and has a good enough handle to play PG in the Pac-12, but she'll be a playmaker whether she plays PG or SG. Shuler has solid size for a PG and a strong build. She has a nice handle and decent quicks. I'd guess she may take some time to adjust, but I like her skill set.
Would be nice to get a good, experienced PG to replace Bendu.

The other ? for next year is who is going to play the three. Lex, Adlee and Lily are the obvious choices and Lex seems to have the head start but Lily has been getting the most time and I suspect it's going to be whoever makes the best progress on defense this summer.

The problem is that there is no real way to predict the impact of Shuler and Hunter. If Rueck is unable or unwilling to land a PG in the portal and neither freshman pans out immediately, then the situation is potentially far worse than waiting for Yeaney to blossom at the spot this season. Rueck absolutely has to land a decent PG in the portal and preferably one with more than one season to play.

With the two Frosh and Martha I'm hoping they do the job at PG. If someone amazing shows up great, but I think out of the three of them someone will get the job done.

I'm thinking Martha might not really be in Rueck's plans all that much. And she played one minute against WSU and seven against UW. She did not play against UO or Stanford (not sure if she's hurt or just stuck on the bench). Either way, she's a backup level PG in the Pac-12 at best. So that means relying on two freshmen, which again is a big risk.

And to add to the mix - just how attractive are the Beavs to a transferring PG?
If this team makes some stellar run through the rest of this season and maybe pull off an upset or two at the Pac-12 tourney, maybe there is a shot to land a transfer. Obviously these are the only things in play for the situation.
GO BEAVS!

I would hope that the prospect of playing with TVO, Gardiner and Beers would be a pretty good lure for point guards who enter the portal even if the Beavers fall short of the NCAA Tournament. If OSU falls back into the type of play they had against UW and WSU, then we probably are looking at a lot of problems for the program (but I think that weekend was an outlier for the Beavers).

Assuming that the top of the rotation next season includes TVO, Timea Gardiner, Beers, AJ, Lex, Noelle and Mit - clearly none of whom are PAC-12 caliber point guards, you indeed would think that a quality PG ' somewhere' could see themself as the 'missing piece'. But alas, there are unknown, mysterious factors at play - so that may be a long shot. Actually it IS NO MYSTERY: Rueck and Rueck's philosophy are a proven turn-off for top-tier / medium-tier PG's. The word is out - and in today's saturated social media world, especially amongst 19 - 22 year olds, it's unlikely that another Destiny Slocum is going to show up. So I'm just hoping that Kennedie Shuler * will blossom and be ready by the start of of PAC-12 season in Dec. 2023. Not to overlook Donovyn Hunter - it's just that she may fit in best in the 2 spot, providing TVO with a good backup. p.s. I do realize that I've "overlooked" Mannen. I really like her, but she's not the answer. * ya never know !

It's interesting that you mention Destiny---it was so much fun watching her run the team at breakneck speed when she 1st started playing for us. Whenever she got the ball and also Mik---they would charge up the floor beating the other team down the floor and get easy buckets or get us into our offense before the other team was set---no looking over at the coach for a play---they were smart enough to run and call their own plays a good portion of the time. Of course this style of play was also going to result in a few TO's from going too fast at times but it got overall good results and wins and was alot of fun to watch. Unfortunately SR gradually ratcheted Destiny down to his slower style of play even benching her at times when she would still push and maybe get a TO here and there. I don't blame her at all for leaving and I think you are right that it will be tough to get a pg like Destiny to come play in SR's system.

Destiny never got benched because of her offense, despite many people around here calling for her benching due to her TO's and what they considered to be her one on one style of play. She got benched due to her defense, or lack therein.

I disagree and I'm probably in the minority here but I thought Destiny was a good defensive player. Her quickness allowed her to quickly shift her feet & body to stay in front of even the quickest of opponents and prevent them from driving to the basket around her....many times I was amazed at how she was able to cut off an opponents move to the basket....I thought at the time wow--no-one else on our team could have done that!......and she always hustled back on defense.

Oh Destiny had good defensive tools, however it's not just physical tools that allow a player to excel in a team defensive system. Off ball positioning, knowing when to help, and how to rotate, are all really important for a good team defense. For example, Bendu is our most physically gifted defender, but she made a critical mistake of over helping and reaching for a steal, leaving her player wide open on the strong side corner. Curry hit the 3 and gave Cal the lead late. (I believe this was right after the Beers basket where she was hit in the eye).

Destiny the defensive ace is a new one to me. But yes, just like Destiny, Bendu also has a tendency of pulling herself out of defensive position going after steals. Talia actually has more steals for the season, but she never gets out of position. She just gets steals in the flow of the defense, ie when going by another player while following her player and she flicks out her hand to knock the ball away.
