Took my FIVE grandkids to see this a few months back. Weak, cheap story line, but GREAT visual and audio appeal. Acting was what one would expect. Not great. Not bad. Expected. Seeing Val Kilmer made me sad, though I’m glad he was included. Still….. damn. I don’t think I’ll rent it. 60 inch screen….. NAW. This one should be viewed on the big screen, louder than hell.

I enjoyed Bullet Train a lot more. Some really dark humor and great plot twists.

I wasn't particularly a fan when the film first came out, although I was a target demo (15yo male) and most of my friends thought it was great.
Had some fun quotable lines, but I wasn't into fighter jets or Kelly McGillis. Goose was still "Gilbert" from RotN to me.
I will also have to admit to never having been much of a Tom Cruise fan.

I enjoyed it, but my expectations were low.
I enjoyed all the callbacks to the original.

I thought this was a really well put together movie, but it essentially made sure it would be successful by harkening back to (copying?) the original where ever possible. But since I have fond memories of the original, that was OK to me. The Goose/Rooster thing could have been trod on a bit more lightly from my perspective. Flying sequences were awesome. Character development less so. Jennifer Connolly was an inspired choice to play Penny / Mav's love interest (I really enjoy Rocketeer to this day). Ultimate flex in the pilot community is the fact that the P-51 Mustang in the close is actually Tom Cruise's, and he is actually flying it in the closing sequence. Color me very jealous in the last 5 minutes of the movie!
Given how much of a money maker it was, I suspect we will see all sorts of spin offs to explore all of the back stories of the Top Gun invitees (Bob, Hollywood, ...) the way Marvel, Star Wars, DC, Star Trek have been mined.

I really think that The Rocketeer is criminally underrated. Of course, I eat up pretty much anything with Jennifer Connelly in it.
