maybe it's a time and place thing. while giving scores of other bowl games he said "amongst the illegal aliens in El Paso, it's UCLA 14 Pitt 6." it's somewhat ironic that in the story I read, the next line after mentioning the suspension was "part of the Sun bowl pregame activities were cancelled because the convention center is being used to house the illigals and that the mayor has declared a state of emergency because of the border problems". I guess its supposed to be a secret

I thought they were asylum seekers. I didn't know they were "illegals."

I guess its supposed to be a secret There are countless 100% truthful things I could say to or about my clients and colleagues at work that would have me fired and down the road before the end of the day. I’m smart enough to know what they are.

They're seeking a better life for themselves and their families. You, evidently wouldn't have the guts or will to do the same. Always AMAZES me how the LUCK and FORTUNE of being born in America (of which you had NOTHING to do with), ESCAPES folks....like you, apparently.

I’d just call it an off the cuff statement that really didn’t have a place in a football game commentary.
Do I think the guy should be fired for it? Not really, but I don’t think a suspension would be out of place.

Immigration, both legal and illegal, has been a hot political topic in the United States for many years. Learfield knows that, as the announcer should have. Commenting on it, however innocuous, is going to provoke response and that isn't what Learfield wants. Learfield simply wants people to focus on the game. Since you say that the announcer's comment doesn't take a stance on the situation, I don't think you can say that Learfield is "virtue signaling." I think Learfield is saying "stick to football."

It's a blatant racist dog whistle.
I think an announcer from California would also have been suspended had he said, "Amongst the toothless inbred rednecks in Tuscaloosa, it's Alabama 14, Ole Miss 6."
