I agree. I like what Smith said about it in his LOI press conference. He talked about how they are always looking for guys to come in compete and make the position group rooms better. He's not looking for one and done NIL and draft hunters hes looking for guys that will buy in and make the team better not use the team to elevate themselves.

IMHO if we are a 'culture' program we should shy away from 1 year wonders in the portal Recruit Develop Grow the Culture WIN Repeat I agree that it's the best way to build a program, and I ideally like to see guys in the program for at least three years, but a one and done every once in a while can really fill a gap. I think QB is a position that's tough to succeed as a one and done, and some of the dudes I've recently heard linked to OSU make me nervous, but there are definite examples of successful one and done QBs.

Agreed. Some portal guys are like MM - a good kid who was basically run off by the new coach because he didn't fit that coach's plans. I trust 9er will be able to sort out which portal kids are worth talking to. I don't think he changes his recruiting pitch for these portal kids, and if a high-profile guy happens to buy in to that pitch, I'm pretty sure he'll expect to be asked to work hard and put the team first.

IMHO if we are a 'culture' program we should shy away from 1 year wonders in the portal Recruit Develop Grow the Culture WIN Repeat NO ONE wants to build a program with one and done players. Its not sustainable. Right now, at the QB position, there is a clear need for depth. We have exactly two QBs on scholarship on the roster (until Chiles shows up). I don't think throwing a true freshman to the wolves immediately is a good idea, and I doubt Jonathan does. Absent a one and done as a gap filler, that leaves Ben and his 145 yd/game average. I know he's had some good games and that his game can be schemed around. But I'd feel a lot more comfortable if we could open up the production at the position. The solution to the one and done problem, at any position, is to recruit HS well. So far in the JS era, QB has been our worst. Jonathan says we will always look for players in the portal, but I think we're going to be in a lot stronger position there if we aren't desperate.

You would think that OSU would be a unique situation for the portal QB - a top 10-15 program with an established O-Line and running game, with a relatively smooth path to PT at the QB position. If you're looking to win games AND showcase yourself for the NFL draft, it seems like the ideal situation. If you're a QB who is a legitimate, established starter with NFL potential, it would seem like a unique opportunity. If you're looking for a guaranteed slot at QB1 and a huge NIL check, I guess it's not the best opportunity. I think we might have to consider it a failure if we don't land a starter out of the portal.

Good get on Starck. He had a bunch of offers after he entered the portal.
Wazzu, UCLA, Cal, Arizona, Arizona State, Penn State, Mississippi State, Missouri, BYU, Hawaii, Colorado State, Syracuse, Tulane, Liberty. Probably more?
2 years to play. That's a really good pickup.

If we don't land one he was either too expensive, not a good fit, or not viewed by the staff as an upgrade to BG or Chiles.

211k NIL deal (per CBS sports), wow, must have been a fierce bidding war?!? We paid that much??? Please tell me no. If he got that much gray, levengood, etc..are going to want to renegotiate their "contract". If true the whole NIL is not sustainable except for maybe a dozen schools.

Could be a really improtant transition piece his senior year in 2024. End of 2023 Marco Brewer, Jake Levengood, Heneli Bloomfield, Flavio Gonzalez all run out of eligibility. Fuaga and Gray could easily go in the draft.
2024 could be a year where we are looking to replace 5 starters/rotators. Having a veteren Senior in his second year in the system could be critical.
