Observations on the team after Hawaii:
I think most impartial basketball scouts, after watching the first 11 games of this season, would come to these general observations about this year’s team.
1. The team is, by almost every measure, slow. Very slow. The only exception is Bendu, and her speed is not effectively utilized. The team is slow on defense, slow on offense. 2. The team has not one single player who qualifies as a good shooter – with the exception of Talia. 3. The team has one tenacious defender. 4. The team is glaringly weak in its perimeter defense. 5. The team is pretty solid when it comes to defensive rebounding. 6. Mit is a significant defensive presence in the paint. Elsewhere not so much. 7. Beers is an impressive hustle-and-produce player in the low post. 8. Talia is the star of the team, and whoever is 2nd is a considerable distance behind. Essentially, we have a team with one really good player, whereas the good teams of the past had 2 or 3, sometimes 4, really good players. 9. At this stage of the season the Beavs are an 8th or 9th place team in the Pac. 10. If Gardiner proves to be a genuine impact player, and Rueck successfully goes to a forward-power oriented game, he has a chance to get his team to a 6th place finish. Odds not very good. 11. This is the weakest team Rueck has fielded in the past 8 or 9 years. ------------------------ HOWEVER: Since being a fan brings with it the curse of eternal hopefulness, and irrational belief in the improbable, I’ll conclude with a dash of optimism: IF the Beavs can somehow beat USC & UCLA in Gill in 2 weeks it may give them a magical pivot into Conference play. So, right now, that’s what I’m hoping for. Magic. Really, magic. I'm truly hoping for it. As a student of the game, however, it’s hard for me to turn a blind eye to the Scouting Reports. Sadly, they don’t believe in magic. 🏀 GO BEAVS!!

Agree with pretty much everything you said and said the same thing last year about team speed and quickness and lack of shooters. I don't watch every game but those games I've watched this year and last we aren't an in your face defense we back off the offensive player giving that player easier dribbles, easier passing lanes, easier shots. There is a reason we don't force turnovers. I don't know if our defense pressure or lack of is based on a coaching philosophy or a lack of quickness to play in your face. But if its a philosophy it needs to change now.

The lack of shooters is a weird one. I'm pretty sure most of this team would kill me in a a game of HORSE. But shooters in actual games, even when open, are really lacking - going on a second year.
Rueck doesn't play pressure defense because he's never had a roster of players that could effectively do it, and does't seem to pursue one. He's always preferred bigger players, which has often also meant slower. So he endeavors to win with limiting offensive rebounds and reducing FG% with that size. I can't think of any Rueck team that would have been effective at pressure defense and forcing TOs. However, we historically been able to be able to at least contest shots, limit driving lanes and rim protect. Rueck has historically done pretty well vs. UCLA, which has the opposite style of defensive philosophy.

Hard to win games when you can't shoot it consistently. Offensive philosophy aside, you can't expect to keep the team in the game if the shooting percentage is marginal.

What I am saying is that a bunch of armchair point guards and couch coaches haven't the expertise to critique a coach with a 68% winning percentage [364 games] at the D1 level. Next we'll start hearing the salami brigade [those in armchairs and couches] will start screaming that Rueck should be fired.

1. The team is, by almost every measure, slow. Very slow. The only exception is Bendu, and her speed is not effectively utilized. The team is slow on defense, slow on offense. I find comments about speed of players irrelevant. People insist that Talia is slow and yet she seems like a good player to me. 2. The team has not one single player who qualifies as a good shooter – with the exception of Talia. Beers is one of the national leaders in shooting %. What do you consider a "good shooter"? 3. The team has one tenacious defender. Mit has been the statistical leader in defensive rating in every game. I guess you mean her? Or the statistical best guard, which is Talia? 4. The team is glaringly weak in its perimeter defense. After 7 years of keeping the other team below 30% from the 3, other teams have averaged over 30% for the past 3 years. My guess is that the constant change in guards has had some small effect on this problem. 5. The team is pretty solid when it comes to defensive rebounding. LSU got 18 offensive rebounds and OSU got 24 defensive rebounds. That's a total pasting. But in general it's been decent. 6. Mit is a significant defensive presence in the paint. Elsewhere not so much. In Ruecks scheme of defense that's what she's supposed to do. 7. Beers is an impressive hustle-and-produce player in the low post. Oh yeah. Now if she can just get those offensive fouls under control. 8. Talia is the star of the team, and whoever is 2nd is a considerable distance behind. Essentially, we have a team with one really good player, whereas the good teams of the past had 2 or 3, sometimes 4, really good players. As the total deal, yes, Talia is pretty good at everything. But how many of that sort has Rueck had? Gulich, Mik, and Weisner are the only ones that come to mind for me. Others have had specialties but as the all around deal like Talia? Those are the only three that come to mind for me. 9. At this stage of the season the Beavs are an 8th or 9th place team in the Pac. Don't think they are beating Stanford soon, but otherwise no idea how much they might improve. 10. If Gardiner proves to be a genuine impact player, and Rueck successfully goes to a forward-power oriented game, he has a chance to get his team to a 6th place finish. Odds not very good. If Timea plays and is good is she seems this is a completely different team. Right now it's been Lex, Lilly and Beers at the 4. Replacing Lex and Lilly's 30 minutes a game with someone close to Talia's abilities? 11. This is the weakest team Rueck has fielded in the past 8 or 9 years. I'd prefer to decide that at the end of the season and not one game into the conference schedule. All of the teams OSU has lost to are top 20 teams in one ranking or another. Not exactly horror material yet. I don't hear anyone stating Rueck should be fired. Some years you have a "rebuilding" season. That is this season. Some could argue that it is still early enough in the season to turn things around and get invited to the big dance. As was pointed out we can't start off the PAC-12 0-3. Given the makeup of this squad, I want to see the coaching staff place their emphasis on developing our young players, and get them game experience now, not later. All 5 freshmen should be getting loads of playing time.

I like hearing from the guys who are really into it and follow other teams. He certainly should not be fired but it would be kind of invigorating he he tried a different approach.
Look at what JS is doing in football, I think it is cutting edge coaching and being adaptable.

Rueck has been a good coach but the pac12 record over the past several years is trending downward. Starting at 2014-15 16-2, 16-2, 16-2, 14-4, 14-4, 10-8, 7-6, and this year 0-1. Shouldn't some of us, many of us be concerned?

The program is an aggregate .500 in conference in the previous 3 years, and sub .500 in aggregate the last two - we have drifted into mediocrity.

Ironically, JS played “old school” football. However, that old school style is played by some very good NFL teams - The 49ers for example. I think Rueck’s core philosophies and styles are solid, but they do need adapted either by the personnel brought in or tweaked to fit them. No philosophy works though if you can’t figure out how to put the ball in the basket consistently on a per-possession basis. A opponent that can keep OSU from shooting well, win the TO margin, and prevent OSU from dominating the offensive glass is very likely to win. That cocktail has been served to OSU a lot in the last two years.
