Interesing that the article mentions only Chiles and Gulbranson being in contention next year.
Are Throckmorton and Montiel just non-factors?

I’m negative on the whole transfer portal, but I’m somewhat intrigued by the Sims kid from Ga Tech. Because of the Jam connection we might be an option.

DJU and Slovis are no thanks. Sure if they want to come for a scholie and ride the bench if they don't get the starting spot.

Armstrong would be my pick. Sees the field, fits it into tight windows. Can run. Grad transfer so presumably would be one and done. That would create room for Chiles in a year so he won't get impatient.
Sims' highlight stuff looks amazing. No questioning his talent. But the scouting report says he is more comfortable rolling out than dropping back, that he struggles if the first read isn't there. We don't need an more of that.
Card I suspect is not a realistic prospect. If he comes west at all it will be to Eugene to rejoin his old coach.
The other two are non-starters. Slovis is so well traveled its just ridiculous. DJU probably carrying too much hype. And DJU's game I don't like. No questioning his phenomenal arm strength--makes some spectacular throws. Haven't seen much touch passing or timing routes in the videos. Throws it 90 MPH every pass. Doesn't seem to be any rhythm in his game. Could be a scary runner at his size and speed if he finds the system to really take advantage. I don't think that system is us.

Does the team actually "need" a transfer QB? Or just because the talking heads see that the second string QB went 7-1 for the season somehow the team needs a transfer...
I'm thinking culture may get the vote on this one. The Jack/Jaydon comments after the bowl game to support Ben seems clear to me. I know they aren't the coaches, but to quote JS, this team is "player led".

Throckmorton will be in his 2nd year and Chiles will be a spring and fall deep. If someone can come in and out compete Ben with 4 years on the team and 8 starts under his belt then fine. For the first time in awhile we won't have an experienced loaded QB room.

I actually talked with someone close to the program in Vegas who said that Card is definitely seriously on our radar. I know that Ben played his tail off, and did a nice job within his limitations of helping us to have such a great year. I like the kid and really appreciate him, but there is an athletic ceiling for him that other contenders don’t have to deal with. When I watch what happens on rollouts when he makes a good effort to evade the rush is a lack of concern about him gouging the defense for many yards and a lot of errant throws on the move. Because he won’t hurt teams as a running threat on option plays, defenses are able to slant down and disrupt. It is only my opinion, but I watched all of our games, and a guy who can make all the throws and put pressure on the edge for defenses would have turned a great 10-3 season with a quality bowl win into an 11 or 12 win season and a New Year’s Six appearance. In reality, I’m not sure how many guys who could actually elevate us next fall at the position are viable candidates for us, but I have been told that the coaching staff is going to try to get someone that can make the QB competition more competitive and raise the level of play there. Chiles is extremely promising, but he shouldn’t have be ready by September. Ben has earned the right to compete for that job no matter what. He’s pretty savvy and a smart player who generally makes pretty good decisions. I’m not sure about him being a true, consistent deep ball threat right now (45+ yards with accuracy), but I’ve heard that he has the best arm on the team. That may or may not be saying much. I would love to see him raise his game in the next 9 months, and just by working with the 1’s all spring and in the summer on his own, he really could be a much more consistent and complete player next year. I, for one, would love that. I believe in Niner and his staff, and don’t worry for a second about him not handling this the right way.

I was reading something this afternoon that said they thought we were the team that would end up with Bachmeier. Personally I hope not unless he'sjust competing for a spot.
My only concern I've had about Ben is the one I've had all season long, that surgery on his throwing shoulder. He was living up to my worry all season until that throw to Bolden... 40 yards in the air and catchable even if it wasn't perfect. Pretty sure that was his first completion of a reasonably decent thrown ball of that length all season. If he can throw a couple 30-40 yarders every game that a receiver can get their hands on, doesn't have to be perfect even, then assuming he can hit the intermediate passes reasonably consistently it makes the passing game more of a threat, which could open up the running game even more.
We probably need a transfer guy for depth, but I don't think we need to make any promises other than they'll get to compete.
In an ideal world Chiles becomes all world after he gets the offense down and we've got solid play in the meantime. If Ben plays as well as hes capable, assuming the rest of the team plays well, we'll do just fine.

JT Daniels just ended up at Rice. I guess his chasing the money plan backfired.

Definitely need a portal kid. Who is our QB besides Ben? Chiles is 17 and won't be 18 until October. Throckmorton has never taken a snap. Injuries happen. 100% need a portal kid and the staff is going hard to get one

My prediction of Card to Eugene was based on the assumption, based on internet chatter, that Bo Nix really wanted to move on and was just sticking around for the bowl game. The other day Nix announced he would return, so, yeah, makes no sense for Card to go there. What I'm hoping for is a one and done guy to come in, do well, and then turn things over to Chiles. I suspect Chiles might be a special player and I would hate for him to get impatient. Based on skillset, I would take Card in a heartbeat, from videos I've seen. Card has three years or eligibility remaining, although, if he really lights it up, it may no take that long to attract NFL interest. I certainly hope we don't settle from Bachmeier--Ben probably beats him out.

While I think a vertern QB to come in and compete with Ben would be a good thing.... The position I woulkd looking most closly at is WR. I LOVE Bolden and Gould, but a big time playmaking WR would improve any QB we start. And of course DL, ALWAYS take any DL you can get
