Very nice game - we won with Pope not carrying as much of the load as he normally does. Washington very high energy, good execution of the press. Essentially matching uw's scoring drought with one of our own added many grey hairs to my head. A couple things I would wish for Christmas for this team: - a base line out of bounds (BLOB) play that reliably gets the ball into the hands of a Beaver within 5 seconds. - not breaking the press with a pass to a player just across the half court line, in a corner, with a converging double team on the way. - a little bit better close out on the 3 point coffin corner shooters.
What is encouraging is 1) we got the dub against u-dub, and 2) my Christmas wish list might be accomplished with additional coaching. Still a fun team to watch, and hopefully watch grow.
Go Beavers!

Agree on the out of bound plays. Too often when inbounding under their own basket and UW’s, the ball would go to the corner and the Beaver player would turn his back on the two defenders, essentially giving UW four defenders with the base/end line and the sideline. Was really frustrating to watch. Another Christmas gift I’d like is for Taylor to go up strong and with a purpose each foray to the basket. Too often he doesn’t have a plan and is just looking for a foul to bail him out. Problem is he isn’t going up strong enough to initiate contact. He had one play last night were the defender just stood there with arms up and didn’t even have to jump to block GTJ’s weak drive. But overall GTJ looked much better tonight and responded well to the benching. Still not where we need him, but his free throws were key and he hit an important 3. Speaking of responding to a benching, after playing minimal minutes against PSU, Ryuny (as well as Marial to some extent) brought it last night — 14 points, 9 rebounds, 5 assists, a block and 5 friggin steals. All of those were team highs or tied for team high in the game. Like him or not, have to give WT credit for pushing the right buttons there and benching 3 of his starters over the course of 2 games. Sends a message to those kids — but possibly more importantly, it sends a clear message to the freshmen. And to their credit, all 3 players improved their play and effort when WT called their numbers again. And what can you say about Rataj. I think most on here who follow recruiting thought he looked like he could potentially be a good one with versatility for Beavers, and now we’re seeing Rataj gain confidence right before our eyes. Last night he played 30 minutes and had 9 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists. I was most impressed with his being active on the court and his passing. He had more assists last night than he did in previous 7 combined. Bilodeau played far fewer minutes, but he also did a few good things, including hitting a jumper just inside the free throw line — a great skill for a player his size to have. Next up USC. Haven’t seen them play this year, but on paper they look pretty decent but beatable. Looks like they have some length, including a 6-11 shot blocker. They don’t appear to be real deep though. Interested to see how team responds to first real road game — though those PKL games might have seemed like true road games. Go Beavs!

Lottsa good comments about the team. I'd add that I like Dexter's aggression with the ball. Strong takes, lobs, dunks, etc. He needs to focus on his ball handling and getting to the basket and less 3 pt shooting. Unless he's in some type of legit 3 pt slump, I've seen enough. 0-5 last night and under 17% for the year on 42 shots.

In-bounding was weak against PSU (2nd game, second half) also. Every opponent should pressure us at those opportunities until we can reliably beat it.

We are incredibly young and inexperienced. Some nights we look great, some nights we look terrible. Last night we looked both. Pope only going 1-7 from the field and us winning is not something I would have expected. Rataj had his best game so far, and Ryuny looks to be our most consistent performer.
A win is a win. Nice to see us get the benefit of a very questionable foul call at the end. Maybe the conference doesn't hate us!

I think the issue w/ the inbounds play and our half court offense in general (which has been alluded to multiple times) is still simple: LACK OF MOVEMENT. Maybe we need to hire Craig Robinson as a special assistant so he can sit on the bench yelling "MOVE!"

Maybe we need to hire Craig Robinson as a special assistant so he can sit on the bench yelling "MOVE!" May we’ll be right on the in bounds. Certainly an issue on offense. There were times last night that I concentrated on player movement to see if it was as really as bad as I thought. At one point during 3 straight possessions there was no movement at all except possibly for the center reposting on different sides of the lane. No screening. no flashing to the free throw line, no rotating to other side — and almost no passing around perimeter. It was ridiculous. Next possession, someone — think it was Ryuny — got called for an illegal screen. Thought to myself, well maybe that’s why they don’t screen.

Other team in a 2-3 zone which is zero surprise coming in and we have everyone standing still. or even worse, giving up their dribble with no plan. Also felt like their were a few times under about 8 minutes where we were clearly more worried about burning clock when we had numbers/could have been aggressive and gone to the hoop. All correctable stuff though!

My concern isn't the players getting better or developing. I think that will happen because they're talented freshman. BUT.....what my concern definitely is, is whether the coaching will be there to take advantage of this improvement. Meaning if they're not coached to move better or even have a better offense to run (especially vs man to man), then its going to be difficult to stay in many games.

Not the All Pac-10 version, but the early version with the physique and skillset to make a "Lucas leap" and become a force on the team. Nice job recruiting him - he has the typical Euro skillset that lets him be a good "tweener", and I just really like his on-court demeanor and how he seems to be figuring it out before our eyes. Unlike Lucas (again, David, not Jarod), he is not starting out scrawny and is at a higher level than Lucas was coming in. Speaking of scrawny, every time Marial hits the deck I hold my breath (esp. last night where he was slow getting up). I guess with a Nutrition program and a Sports Science program at OSU, if the answer was to just run him through Burger King six times a day we would have done that, but I sure hope he can bulk up his frame at some point.... Speaking of figuring it out, I keep waiting for Nick Krass to show he merits a Pac-12 scholly. Up until I looked up his bio, I thought he had been pressed into service a year early because of the backcourt injuries, but his bio seems to indicate he should be able to contribute at a higher level than he has thus far. Another storyline to follow. Go Beavers!

2ndGen — Krass has been about what I expected thus far. No ranking on him and didn’t seem like he was highly recruited out of HS, so I figured he would be a more developmental piece. Thought he might supply some 3-pt shooting off the bench. I think he was 0-fer for first 4 or so games, but has hit a couple shots up in Portland. I don’t think he’s looked lost necessarily, but hasn’t really added much. I had him penciled in for same kind of numbers Reichle put up his freshman year, which wasn’t much. I think he could develop — again to about the same level as Reiclhle, and wouldn’t be surprised if he has a game or two this year where some timely contributions helped get a win.
