...after that rotten egg the team laid vs Portland State? As someone that went to the game mentioned, that game was determined by a bunch early turnovers and cold shooting. I don't think the team had shown those problems in earlier games. I get the feeling the Beavers won't be blowing anybody out this season, but they still may win a decent number of games, and if they can up the defense a bit they won't likely be blown out much either. Andela's availability is really key. Mariol is great defensively for short periods, hopefully that will be for extended periods down the line here. Andela has been playing solid and his injury really played a factor in this game. I think it'll be close to the spread, but I'm hoping for a pleasant surprise. This is a young team, I thought Bilodeau and Rataj were looking more involved and comfortable this game. That bodes well, maybe not immediately though against a top ranked team, as the season progresses.

...after that rotten egg the team laid vs Portland State? Y'know. Oregon State has played Duke exactly twice ever, once in Raleigh and once in Louisville. The Louisville one is memorable, because it was against #2 Duke after losing to #1 Cincinnati in the Final Four. In 122 years of Oregon State basketball, this is the first opportunity the Beavers have had to play Duke west of Louisville. Truly a once in a lifetime event, a once in a lifetime opportunity for Wayne Tinkle and the players to pick up a gutshot straight. It's probably a loss. But outside of the two games against Arizona, this is Oregon State' s regular season Super Bowl. No tougher opponent, and you get Duke in Portland. Opportunity of a lifetime. Let's roll 'em. Also, note that Oregon State has played Duke in football once, basketball twice, and baseball thrice: Football January 1, 1942 Oregon State 20 - Duke 16 The Beavers' lone Rose Bowl victory.
Basketball
December 28, 1953 Duke 71 - Oregon State 61 Oregon State won the Pac-12 North but lost the Pac-12 Championship Game to USC 48-45. The Trojans lost 74-72 in the Final 4. March 23, 1963 Duke 85 - Oregon State 63 Oregon State went to the Final Four but closed out the season losing to #1 Cincinnati and #2 Duke.
Baseball
June 12, 1952 Duke 18 - Oregon State 7 Duke beats Oregon State in the Beavers first ever game at the College World Series. February 17, 2017 Oregon State 6 - Duke 3 Bryce Fehmel picks up win #1 on the season. Nick Madrigal starts of 3/4 with three-run home run and stolen base. Win #2 of 56. February 19, 2017 Oregon State11 - Duke 2 Grant Gambrell picks up his only career save in his first ever appearance, allowing three hits in three innings. Win #3 of 56.
As I noted in 2017, Duke - Oregon State almost invariably portends great things for Oregon State. Here's hoping that that continues to be the case.

I don't mind getting OSU's highest ranked opponent in early OOC play... call it a learning experience, call it an opportunity, it's not likely setting the tone for the entire season.
