Most highly ranked recruiting classes have a class headliner or marquee player at the top of the class. Occasionally there will be an additional player that fits that description. In looking at the current OSU recruiting classes from 2022 through 2026, that fact holds true. With the class headliners comes the risk of the MLB Draft in the summer and angst with the coaches and fans.
In 2022, Arizona outfielder Gavin Turley was a marquee player with a 5 tool resume’ and a + makeup grade. He was the headliner in the Beaver class. He wasn’t drafted in the first round and opted to play baseball at Oregon State. Gavin was the 16th ranked player in the nation by Rawlings-Perfect Game. Gavin was a considerable draft risk and as we subsequently learned, so was nationally ranked RHP Tyler Gough. Tyler was drafted by the Mariners and they signed him.
Shortstop Trent Caraway is the headliner in the 2023 class. Trent is a multi-position player that has done some prolific hitting in high school and on the travel team circuit, and touches 93 mph on the mound. He plays at J.Serra Catholic HS in Orange County in soCal and is ranked No. 40 nationally by Rawlings-Perfect Game, and # 22 by Prep Baseball Report. He is ranked the 93rd best prospect in the 2023 Draft which translates to a possible 3rd round pick. Because of the consistent hard contact and power, there is risk with Trent.
The 2024 headliner at this point is Zach Swanson, a power pitcher from Toutle Lake HS in Washington. Swanson has a 6-3, 193 pound frame, a 94 mph heater and eye-popping secondary stuff. Zach is ranked # 51 by RPG. In the national Showcase tournaments, Swanson has induced a high % of K among some very good prep hitters. Zach will be eligible for the 2024 draft and we should be aware of the looming risk factor with our RHP.
In the 2025 class, we have several marquee players but the class headliner is Xavier Neyens, a multi-position player (3B-C-RHP) from Mt. Vernon, WA HS. Neyens is a powerful LH hitter that was hitting tape measure shots at age 15. Another potential 5-Tool athlete for Beaver baseball. Neyens has a powerful arm, can run, hit for average to all fields and he can leave the yard quickly with warp bat speed. Xavier is currently ranked the 8th best Prep player in the U.S. by Rawlings-Perfect game. Right now, there is considerable MLB Draft risk here.
The 2026 recruiting class is just beginning to take shape with 4 early commitments but Riverside, CA. outfielder Blake Bowen might be the early head\liner. Blake is 6-2, 186 and exceptionally strong. Hits with raw power and has top tier speed. Bowen currently holds class rankings of # 40 and # 71 nationally. A multi-sport athlete that excels playing football (WR/DB) and baseball.
Anxiety is not not limited to OSU. Here are some other schools in the PAC-12 with Headliners and “at risk” recruits in their 2022 class. These recruits are all potential 5th Round or earlier selections;
