Baseball America did a 2022 draft class analysis on the Cincinnati class. Our guy, Justin Boyd fared very well/ 1. He's the best athlete in the Reds draft class 2. He's the fastest player in the class 3. The Reds think he can be a future center fielder.
Best Athlete: "Boyd (2s) is a standout athlete in the traditional manner with impressive speed, but the Reds are also excited about the athleticism that Catcher Cade Hunter (5) has shown behind the plate.
Fastest Runner: OF Justin Boyd (2s) is an above-average runner who stole a career-best 24 bags for Oregon State during the spring, at a 77% success rate. He primarily played right field in college, but scouts thought he could handle center field and during a 2022 debut with Low-A Daytona, Boyd spent most of his time in center, with innings in left field as well.

Darius Perry making it was silly....Tincher silly. Brennan Millone DH'ing over Boyd? There are a handful more but keeping my bloodpressure down

But did he play better in conference? No.

Brennan Milone nice slugging percentage while he watched over the sunflower seeds and gatorade on the bench while Boyd was on all defensive team and stole a ton of bases on top of that...even with that, we can argue about Milone all you want (even though I'm right) but there are several others that were ridiculous

Absolutely. And the $647.5K extra that he received in his signing bonus reflects that. Boyd played well outside of conference but did not do so well, during conference play. Milone also had a drop-off between non-conference and conference play, but it was not as severe as Boyd's for whatever reason. Talentwise, Boyd deserved a spot. Absolutely. But statistically, he did not earn it. It happens.

Boyd had a lot of trouble adjusting to the A level Midwest league.
Really struggled in August, but played a bit more respectable in September.
It appears he was drafted where he was because of his "tools", and maybe he out-athleted a lot of the OOC guys in the past?
Let's hope his athletic skills eventually translate into being a good pro ball player.

Let's hope his athletic skills eventually translate into being a good pro ball player. Boyd has no weaknesses but no real strengths either. He does everything well but nothing great. The knock on Boyd is that he does not hit the ball very hard that often. Boyd hit six home runs in his final 12 games. If he had done something more like that all year, we are talking about where in the first round he would fall rather than whether he is a low second or high third rounder. He was drafted as high as he was, because he has huge upside, if they can get him to start crushing the ball more often.
