At 98 years young, James Earl Carter, Jr., is the oldest person who was an American President.
Over two decades after he left office, he received an - un-shared - Nobel Peace Prize, "“for his decades of untiring effort to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, to advance democracy and human rights, and to promote economic and social development.”
By the time he was 95, the Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project with Habitat for Humanity helped 4,390 families move into affordable homes in the U.S. and 13 other countries.
Until recently, he taught Sunday school at Marantha Baptist Church in Plains, Georgia - as if the life he led wasn't already an exemplar of what being a true Christian could be.

Greatest President born in a Sanitarium.

He and Berry Gordy Jr., the founder of Motown Records, are blood relatives through Carter's grandfather.

Great man. Very below average President. Probably. But Israel and Egypt are still abiding by the peace treaty he brokered. And that is not insignificant by any means. There is an excellent, unauthorized bio of Carter that takes a very honest look at his life and presidency and gives it much higher marks than most. It's outstanding reading if you are a person of that era. www.amazon.com/His-Very-Best-Jimmy-Carter/dp/1501125486

That, of course led to the invasion of Kuwait and the later invasion of Iraq by Allied Forces in 2003. The Camp David Accords also led to Anwar Sadat's assassination, which also set in motion the Israeli Invasion of Lebanon and the creation of Hezbollah. Osama bin Laden stated that he was inspired to attack the Twin Towers in response to Israel's 1981 bombing of Lebanon and the destruction of a seven-story Lebanese apartment building and attacks on several other buildings. It is further no accident that al-Qaeda grew out of Egyptian Islamic Jihad. And it is also no accident that Egyptian Islamic Jihad was the primary paramilitary organization, which radicalized Osama bin Laden in the first place. Al-Qaeda was basically the fusion of Egyptian Islamic Jihad's paramilitary experience and radical Islam teachings with Osama bin Laden's money and Saudi connections. And the thing that focused al-Qaeda's wrath upon the United States was Hussein's invasion of Kuwait, and the Americans arriving in Saudi Arabia en masse. Bin Laden moved to Sudan in 1991 or 1992, but al-Qaeda, still preoccupied with Egyptian affairs as a result of the Camp David Accords, tried to kill Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak in Ethiopia in 1995 and were driven to Afghanistan. Bin Laden, who was trying to run various businesses in Sudan, rather than focusing on terrorism, began to focus more on terrorism. It was also in Afghanistan that bin Laden ran into Khalid Sheik Mohammed, the pair being primarily responsible for planning the 9/11 attacks. It is also no accident that the leader of the 9/11 attacks, Mohamed Atta, was Egyptian. Atta moved to Germany in 1992. Atta did not move back to Egypt, because he believe that he would be persecuted by Egypt's government after the attempted assassination of Mubarak. Atta decided to become a jihadist in 1996 after Israel's Operation Grapes of Wrath in Lebanon. In 1999, he convinced Marwan al-Shehhi (pilot of Flight 175) and Ziad Jarrah (the Lebanese pilot of Flight 93) to travel to the Middle East for jihad. The three ultimately wound up at an al-Qaeda camp. When the three returned to Germany in 2000, they each got new passports and then applied for visas to enter into the United States. Al-Shehhi was the second of the 19 hijackers in the United States, Atta was third, and Jarrah was fourth. Nawaf al-Hazmi was the first in San Diego. He would meet the fifth hijacker, Hani Hanjour (the Flight 77 pilot) in San Diego in December 2000. The pair would be two of the five hijackers on Flight 77 It should also be noted that the first round of talks failed. Carter, Sadat, and Begin went to Gettysburg on September 10, 1978. The final round of talks began on September 11, 1978, resulting in the treaty six days later. The first day of the Battle of Vienna was fought on September 11, 1683 between the Ottomans and an allied force from Poland, Saxony, Bavaria, Baden, Franconia, and Swabia and some Zaporozhians (Southern Ukrainians) under Polish king Jan (Polish for "John") III Sobieski. These two historical dates are the most probable reason why the September 11th attacks occurred on that date. Several mentions of the September 11, 1978, date occurred on September 11th and in the days that followed. Of course, the fact that Flight 93 crashed approximately halfway between Camp David and Pittsburgh helped to reinforce the date. Anyway, in the agreement, Carter promised that the American taxpayers would agree to send approximately $2.1 billion per year to Egypt and $3.1 billion per year to Israel. So, we got all of the above for the low, low price of approximately $125 billion! Adjusted for inflation, that is only what $500 billion or so? Yay! Carter basically on-shored the problems between Egypt and Israel and forced us to pay for it. With Presidents like him, who needs enemies? I was born in the waning days of the Carter Administration. My father-in-law, before he died, used to talk about Ronald Reagan's 1981 Inauguration as a new morning in America after the pitch black night that was the Carter Administration. I probably won't be reading that book. Still working on my Ulysses S. Grant book. Carter has been a phenomenal ex-President, but he was an awful President from beginning to end. He is a nice guy. No doubt about it. But nice people often make just awful leaders. Oh well.

Now tell me what would have happened in the Middle East in the 40+ years since Camp David had Israel and Egypt remained mortal enemies.
Lots of s%#tty things happened after Appomattox too, most notably the rise of white terrorism in the south in the form of the KKK and other hate groups who lynched and murdered pretty much at will for decades and decades. You going to say Appomattox was a mistake too?
Millions and millions did not share your father-in-law's opinion about Ronald Reagan, whose ranking as a president by prominent historians has slipped considerably in recent years. We'll leave it at that.
