Kansas City Royals farmhand Christian Chamberlain has been included on the Surprise Saguaros roster that will play a 6 week schedule in the Arizona Fall Baseball League with the Glendale Desert Dogs, Mesa Solar Sox, Peoria Javelinas, Salt River Rafters. and the Scottsdale Scorpions. The Surprise 40 man roster includes promising prospects from the Royals, Rangers, Phillies, Astros and Pirate organizations. The league is selective and considered to be prestigious in professional baseball circles.
Christian was drafted in the 4th round (105th overall) by the Kansas City Royals in 2020. He received a $450,000 signing bonus and was assigned to the Royal's Advanced A affiliate, Quad Cities (Midwestern League) in Davenport, Iowa. He suffered an injury and made only several appearances in 2021.
In 2022, Christian split his time with Advanced-A Quad Cities and AA Northwest Arkansas. The NW Arkansas Naturals play in the modern Arvest Park in Springdale, Arkansas with a seating capacity of 6,600 and compete in the Texas League's Central Division.
In 2022, Christian appeared in 13 games at Quad Cities, 14 at NW Arkansas. The Northwest Arkansas Naturals finished their season with a 57-78 record. Christian had a 3-0 record with an 8.31 ERA. all in relief.
Chamberlain's minor league stat line is average at best but there are two exceptional stats that that tell the story to date, his number of walks issued per 9 innings juxtaposed with the number of strikeouts per 9 innings. To date in his brief minor league career, Christian has made 30 appearances, pitched 50 2/3 innings, allowed 36 earned runs with 45 BB and 76K and a record of 4-1 and an ERA of 6.39.
The reason Christian is in Arizona this fall? The 13.5K's/ 9 Innings and to work on the reduction of the 7,99 BB/ 9 innings. The Scouting Reports on Chamberlain emphasize 3 things, 1) He has "filthy stuff". a + 96 mph fastball with
good movement, 2) a wicked, biting slider that also nets a + grade, and 3) there is an inordinate amount of "whiff (swing and miss) by hitters at his offerings. Two plus pitches, and 13.5 K's/ 9 IP will get you to Arizona in the fall.
