Royals = U of nike. All flash, no substance. I'd say they are polar opposites: Royals are the absolute definition of "old money", while nike u is quintessential "new money".

Have some very upset or very distracted friends, there are a lot of "royalists" in the US and an event like this will have them glued to the tv/internet. I do not understand the fascination that people have with royals that have little to no power. Weird. I think it's the American in me, but I don't get monarchy, period. It's weird how many Thai restaurants have a picture of the king. King Charles III...whatever. I could care less about William, Harry and their wives. And Lady Diana...ugh. She still pops up in the news.

That said, the British have chosen to maintain a ceremonial monarch as a performative Head of State. Within that unearned role Elizabeth II discharged her many duties honorably and humbly. And for that, I find little to criticize and much to commend. We shall see whether this arrangement survives the tenure (I refuse to call it the “reign”) of Charles III.

Our biggest institution is arguably capitalism and names like Kennedy, Vanderbilt, Carnegie, Ford, Melon etc have similar nostalgia in our history as dead royals. We still put billionaires and the rich on a pedestal despite obvious issues.

I'm sure the institution of the British monarchy will survive Charles III, as his reign will be relatively short. I'm more interested to see if nations take this moment to leave the Commonwealth. I would.

We'll take the Windsor's in exchange for the Kardashians and an influencer to be named later.

Sorta think that Britain might have dissolved the royal family had E2 not lived so long. It'll be interesting to see if Chucky can endear himself to the people enough to keep the whole royal thing going. Most countries have moved beyond the need for royalty.

The monarchs are figure heads that don't rule. They just get to wear crowns and wave from the balcony It's tradition. Yeah, I just meant more substantially.

I always liked South Park's mockery of British Royal Weddings in their Canadian Royal Wedding.
