I was lucky enough to catch the end year of Nolan Ryan's career and was a fan - but watching this documentary was eye opening.
5700 some odd strikeouts.........next closest guy is Randy Johnson (bird slayer) and he is over 1000 behind.
7 no hitters.
Neither of those will ever be broken. Ever.
He also had the most 2 hitters - 3 hitters and 4 hitters; along with a plethora of other records. BUT - never won a cy young - to many walks I guess - but damn.
Also the leader in walks - but I figure a bunch of of those were from intentionally plunking guys. I enjoyed hearing from absolute legends of baseball how they hated facing him truly hated it. Rose, Brett, Ripken, Winfield......
I was most pleased with the fact that Robin Ventura refused to be interviewed for the show. Thus cementing his legacy as that of a complete red-ass.
Highly recommend the show.

My Mom, Dad and I drove to Seattle to watch him pitch. Unfortunately he gave up 5 runs, I think, with no outs, got pulled and never pitched again. The managers got into a matchup pitching change scenario and the game slowed to a Seattle slugs pace. We left early; it was a long drive back to Canby.

Should write a book.

I was there, if you’re referring to his last game.

A bummer he didn't get a "Farewell Tour" - apparently he felt something significant pop in his elbow and that was it. Last game, last pitch.

During Ryan's most dominant years - 1972-1977, his team never had a winning record. Also, pitcher wins were more important to the Cy Young voters back then than they are now. That said, in bWAR, his best finish was 2nd, so he wasn't ever the "best" pitcher in his league by that measure, either. He was probably the most "dominant" pitcher ever, but also probably never the "best" pitcher in his league in a single year. Ryan finished 2nd once, 3rd twice, 4th once, 5th twice, and 8th & 9th in Cy Young voting.

I never was a Ryan fan. Perhaps it was because he played for the Astros when I first became aware of him and never liked that team. I think I was 12 or so at the time and I thought their uniforms were stupid, which was in my mind enough to dislike a team.
As a Giants fan, Will Clark quickly became my favorite player in the mid/late-80s. His first at-bat in the majors was a home run off Nolan Ryan and that was more than good enough for me.

Great story about Ryan in the book "the baseball codes". against teams that like to bunt , before he threw the first pitch he would walk up in front of home plate and tamp down the grass and pack the dirt all the while while glaring into the other team's dugout. message sent.
