The NCAA has announced the new Transfer Portal rules that will aid coaches in coping with roster upheaval. Transfers will be allowed to enter the Portal during two periods annually.
1. Transfers may enter the Portal for 45 days following the NCAA Tournament selection day, which falls on May 29 in 2023. The Portal closes to transfers around mid July of 2023.
2. Transfers may enter the Portal between December 1st and December 15th each year. Players entering the Portal during the December period WILL NOT BE ELIGIBLE TO PLAY THE FOLLOWING SPRING. EX: Players entering the Portal in the December period of 2022 cannot play until 2024.
3. There will be Waivers available. A) a player whose head coach leaves the program (voluntarily or involuntarily) will be allowed to transfer immediately. B) a player at a school that cuts financial aid or reduces scholarships will be allowed to transfer immediately.
* * * The highly controversial "unlimited transfer" proposal did not pass muster on this go-around. Obviously the coaches were not in favor of that idea - roster and recruiting chaos x 10 with that proposal.
