Mario Puzo, author of The Godfather, wrote a book in the late 90s called, "Omerta." There was one passage that mentioned the mob looking askance at Gorbachev because he had to do pizza commercials after he left office. It was their opinion that he should have been smart enough to steal millions from the Soviet Union while he was in office.
Incidentally, there was another passage in the book that discussed the US government having a mass-surveillance program waiting in the wings for a time when terrorists blew up a building or something similar.

Incidentally, there was another passage in the book that discussed the US government having a mass-surveillance program waiting in the wings for a time when terrorists blew up a building or something similar. I disagreed with his politics, but I 100% believe that Gorby's heart was in the right place. He believed in Communism. He believed that it could work without the gulags, with fewer media filters, and without the spying. And he was wrong. But at least he did not murder everyone on a commercial airliner like Andropov did in '83. Honestly, though, even if he had stolen millions of rubles, the inflation rate in Russia after Yeltsin took over was what 4,727% in the first five years before they devalued their currency. Even if Gorby had stolen millions, those millions were thousands by 1997. And that was before Russia devalued their currency in 1998. There is a reason that Putin was able to start winning elections starting in 2000. The country was basically in shambles.
