I remember rooting for him and the Chiefs against Joe Kapp, and the heavily favored Vikes in Super Bowl FOUR. THAT made it two in a row for the AFL. Important. RIP, Lenny.

Great photo. Not being ironic or sarcastic. This was just the way it was in the 60's. Adults smoked everywhere. I bet he had a great second half.

Kansas City was shut out in the second half of that game, but it had nothing to do with Dawson smoking a cigarette. It had every thing to do with the Green Bay defense being very good. The picture is a classic, taken during halftime of Super Bowl 1.

Hey Wilky, enough of Len Dawson cigarette talk. The real 'cigarette talk' is going to take place September 24, 2022 against Southern Cal. Remember your post about Protho and cigarettes during the 1960 win down there. Guess who will be lighting up during the game? Me!!!!! Its a small price to pay for back-to-back victories against the West Coast traitors, who are trying their best to destroy our conference. Puff....puff...cough... cough....Smitty and the team broke the streak......but we played a roll in it, buddy😀

Its a small price to pay for back-to-back victories against the West Coast traitors, who are trying their best to destroy our conference. Puff....puff...cough... cough....Smitty and the team broke the streak......but we played a roll in it, buddy😀 Well played, brother. It is somewhat interesting that UCLA and USC (with the help of California and Washington) torpedoed the Pacific Coast Conference in 1958. Although the conference no longer existed, the Pacific Coast Conference was still contractually obligated to supply a champion to the Rose Bowl in 1959. Washington had a schedule consisting of all eight teams in the Pacific Coast Conference and Colorado and Utah from the future Pac-12. The Huskies went 9-1, only loss to USC and were crowned the champions. California, UCLA, USC, and Washington were trying to team with Stanford to create a better regional conference that involved teams in Colorado and further east. Largely because of geopolitical issues at the time, it fell apart, so the five ultimately just started their own conference, the AAWU. 1960 was the first true year of the AAWU (the "Pac-5") and the first true year of Oregon State being an independent. With all of that, the Beavers went down to the Coliseum and beat USC in the first game for Oregon State as an independent and USC as a true member of the AAWU. And the Beavers went down to the Coliseum and crushed the Trojans, 14-0. It was also the first year that Terry Baker played football. He played the next two years and won the Heisman, the first Heisman winner from West of the Pecos. Baker and Prothro basically compelled the Pac-6 to invite them back. In 2021, Oregon State beat USC at the Coliseum, the final year before the Trojans announced that they were leaving the Pac-12 for the Big Ten. As J.M. Barrie wrote in "Peter Pan, "All of this has happened before, and it will all happen again." Maybe Len Dawson was trying to almost literally pipe in that Prothro luck at halftime.
