An analysis of the youthfulness of Division I college baseball coaches recently established that, A) More D-1 coaches are under 40 years of age than ever before, B) There are 25 D-1 head coaches that are not yet 37 years old, C) Mitch Canham, who many thought was too young at age 34 to lead the Beaver program, didn't even make the cut on this list of 25 youngsters.
Blake Beemer, the Head Coach at Butler University is the youngest at 31years and 5 months. Dan Pirillo, the Head Coach at Long Island University is the oldest at 36 years and 8 months.
On two occasions this past season, Mitch was the "elder" on the field - against Cal-Irvine's Ben Orloff (35 years and 4 months), and against Billy O'Conner the Head Coach at Xavier University (35 years and 6 months).
Was Mitch too young?
Once upon a time, USC hired a young 28 year old Trucking Company executive to run their program - Rod Dedeaux.

This is going to devolve, but hopefully at least something will be mildly interesting. USC lost its coach, Sam Barry, because he enlisted in the Navy after Pearl Harbor. Rod Dedeaux was hired, because he was draft-proof. He was 4-F with a cracked vertebra from playing minor league ball in cold weather in the 30s. Barry was a basketball coach first and foremost. He coached other sports, because USC was really hurting during the Great Depression. Barry is often credited with creating the triangle offense. Morice "Tex" Winter was recruited to play basketball for Slats Gill and pole vault . Winter was basically an Olympic-level pole vaulter, who also played basketball. Tex' wife Nancy Chase Bohnenkamp also attended Oregon State. Tex was trained to be a Navy pilot and was supposed to be sent to the Pacific Theater, but his only brother died in combat, so he stayed stateside for the duration of the war. Nancy was also in the Navy for the War. Afterwards, Tex and Nancy married and Tex enrolled at USC for his senior year. There, Barry taught Winter his version of the triangle offense, which Winter worked on thereafter. Winter would subsequently employ his version of the Triangle Offense, when he was an assistant with the Bulls with great effect. Late in 1946, Barry returned to USC and coached basketball and scouted opposing teams for football. Dedeaux coached baseball. Once basketball season ended, though, Barry would move over to be the head coach for the baseball team. Barry and Dedeaux were co-head coaches, but Barry was really the head coach with Dedeaux as his prime assistant. USC won its first National Championship in that manner in 1948. In 1950, Barry died, while trying to climb up Charter Hill (aka "Tightwad Hill") to scout California.
