Corvallis Knights go for their 6th straight West Coast league title tonight, nothing odd about that, but what is totally funky is the playoff structure. They played a 3 game series in the quarterfinals, but only 1 game in the semi's, and now have a one game final for all the marbles.
a 3-1-1 play off structure is unreal. How can that happen? Simple, that's baseball.

The season had to be shortened by a week to get players home earlier. Rather than condense the regular season, they condensed the playoffs. Eight teams made the playoffs, each was guaranteed at least one home game.
Regular-season success was rewarded with a home game in the divisional finals to the teams with the best records in each division, and again in the finals, with the team with the best overall record getting to host.
Given the great crowds in Bellingham and in Corvallis, the fans seem to like the change.

I get the shortened season, but why not play a 1-1-3 format instead. Still very strange, but congrats to the Knights on their 6th straight title - talk about dynasties!

Formate doesn’t seem to matter to the Knights, won their 6th straight title. 5-0. Great job boys

Because the first round is 1 v 4 and 2 v 3 in each division. A one-off instead of best-of-3 would make it much easier for the lower seed to win, and significantly reduce the reward for superior regular-season performance.

It gives more teams more games. You get at least three and maybe four extra games that way. Also, the Knights were the only team that advanced to the Division Championship Series that lost the first game. If it were 1-1-3, a different team likely walks away with the hardware.
