Tanner tore the cover off the ball at Basha HS in Chandler. Tanner smashed huge home runs in summer travel ball. Tanner has "blast" in his barrel. Tanner might hit 15 Dingers a year here if . . . .
1- he tweaks his pitch recognition a tad. 2- learns to tighten up his zone - a little bit better pitch selection.
That comes with experience facing PAC pitching. It falls under the category of "making adjustment from prep to D1 pitching".
FWIW: The other young catcher, Weber is no slouch when it comes to power - Big "pop" in his bat. I think he hit more home runs than anybody in Oregon 6A his Senior year at Barlow (like, maybe 9).

Yes! Both Weber and Smith can hit it out. This summer (each in WCL): Weber 116 AB / 6 HR / 40 SO.......Smith 53 AB / 3 HR / 15 SO.

Rule of thumb; ideally you don't want to see more than about 22-23% of a power hitter's PA's end with a K. Weber has K'd on almost 35% of his AB's. He will need to reduce that frequency by maybe 25% (Guesstimate) to fall into the analytically acceptable range of K's/ PA.
Smith on the other hand, has K'd on about 28% of his AB's and needs only to cut down about 15%.
* Since we only have the AB number and don't have the PA stat to work with, I used an approximated number of AB + 15% to arrive at the PA # which to apply the 22-23% figure.
I suspect neither Smith or Weber (free swingers) to have exceeded 15% more PA's than AB's - ROE, BB, and HBP.
Analytically, striking out is just an out. An out that is less desirable than a Sac fly, RBI ground ball, or any ball in play that forces the defense to execute the out, with the exception a DP ground ball, or a DP line out, in which case the K is preferable.
Cut those whiff rates down, boys!
