Gifted players that commit to Oregon State but end up signing professional contracts before ever setting foot inside of Goss, are always an enigma - you follow them for years and become a little attached to them, they are "almost a Beaver" in my thinking. Jesuit's Mick Abel committed to Pat Casey following his freshman year and was a fixture around the OSU program and players for 3 years. Drafted in the first round by the Phillies, Mick signed for millions and has progressed nicely through the Philadelphia farm system. He is now with the Jersey Shore Blue Crabs, the Phillies Advanced-A affiliate. Phillies GM Dave Dombrowski has said Mick has a shot at being in the big club's rotation next year.
Here is a little catch-up on Mick.
Abel has been at times dominant but has a 3.64 ERA in 17 starts with 10.9 strikeouts per nine for the BlueClaws.
“It’s been going all right,” Abel said of his second pro season. “I wouldn’t say it’s standing out to me in any way. This last start was good, and I think it’s a pretty strong start to the second half.”
The 6-foot-5 hurler was referring to his July 29 outing at Wilmington, when he threw six scoreless innings, scattering four hits and two walks while striking out 10. In 2021, Abel mainly relied on his fastball, which sits in the mid-90s (mph), and his slider. This season, coaches told him to mix in his curveball and changeup after he thought he lost them as weapons last year when he went away from them. Abel, who turns 21 next week, said the fastball still accounts for half of his pitch total in most outings, but he has a healthier mix than he did a year ago.
