In other news, Jacob Melton started 0/9 with four strikeouts and a double-play in West Palm Beach. The stadium is less than seven miles from the beach. That must be tough......... Wade Meckler is 2/5 with three runs in Scottsdale in his first two games. Gavin Logan played his first game. He DH'd. He doubled but was stranded in Scottsdale. Frisch and Pfennigs are both supposedly in Mesa. The last that I heard DJ Carpenter was in Frederick, but he may have already moved somewhere else. I have not heard what, if anything the Cards intend to do with Hjerpe this year.

I remember WAY back in 2014, the Royals drafted Brandon Finnegan in the first round, and he pitched in the MLB that season, including 7 games in the playoffs. I'm sure there are more recent examples, but players seem just as likely to sit out of actual games during their draft year as they are to start playing. I'm not sure if that's caused by the reduction of short-season teams and the later draft, or if the later draft and the reduction of short season teams is because teams don't want to use guys that first year. Seems to me, if you're investing several million $$ in signing bonuses in drafted players, you'd want them to start on the path to MLB ASAP.

I'm seeing that Garret Crochet - drafted in 2020 - was the only guy between Brandon Finnegan and today to play in the MLB in the same year he was drafted.
