First two rounds of the draft - summary.
UCLA's highly touted RHP J.R. Ritchie from Bainbridge Island HS in Washington was a first round compensatory draft pick at #35 by the Atlanta Braves. That slot is $2,2000,000.
Ritchie was committed to Oregon State for over a year but flipped when PC retired and Yeskie left for Tucson.
Jackson Cox, the heat throwing RHP from Toutle Lake, WA. was selected at #50 in the 2nd round by the Colorado Rockies. His slot is $1.54m. That could be an "over slot" signing. He's committed to the oregon ducks.
Those were the PAC-12 impact recruits I spotted on the first day of the draft.
Hope they both sign!

No real drama on day 2 with only one recruit drafted.
Really obvious in this draft, many touted recruits are opting for college baseball and an education. Believe me, NIL is in play in college baseball. I hope to share a few stories in the future.
Gavin Turley was passed over through 10 rounds. Obviously he was not signable. I would speculate he had a calculus in place, hung out a big price tag that sent a message. Beaverball first, then reach for the gold in the '25 draft. Shades of Tyree Reed.
Tyler Gough was selected by the Mariners in the 9th round. Ignore the $159,300 slot bonus - if there was ever an "over slot bonus" situation, this is it. A starting point of $500k wouldn't surprise me.
A little wild speculation might see Macias, Krieg and Keljo pop up on day 3. The money won't be there - they'll go to school.

Day 3 dawns: BA hasn't given up on Turley or Macias - the 8th and 66th best available players on Day-3. That suggests a deal is in place for Turley - keep your early round picks intact, take Turley late after he's scared everyone off with a big price tag, then pay him way over slot.
I'm not much for conspiracy theories but that's what this might suggest. On the other hand, it's possible (if not probable) that BA hasn't updated their board. They also have Jayden Noot, a high value RHP on their board. Noot was an Oregon commit, flipped to LSU (maybe for NIL), and isn't likely to sign for 3rd day money.
We shall see.

Day 3 of of the draft was relatively uneventful with the exception of The Arizona Diamondbacks selecting Gavin Turley in the 19th round. If I'm correct, that will be a draft and follow situation with Gavin headed to Oregon State to begin his college career.
One other selection of interest was UO commit Jackson Jaha, a 3B from Clackamas HS taken by the NY Mets in the 15th Round. I'll be excited to see him sign and launch his pro career.
One development to watch will be the Duck's flame throwing Canadian, Adam Maier. Adam was injured in 2022 at UO and has now been drafted in the 7th round. His slot is $215,000 - will he sign?
OSU's JC transfer, RHP Geo Rivera from national JC power, Walters State was a 19th round pick by the Cleveland Guardians. A signing is doubtful.
The Beavers 2022 class is relatively unscathed with Gough the biggest concern out of our 22 recruits. The OSU coaches will sleep better tonight.

On Monday, they added two more high-end, high-school pitchers to the fold in right-handers Ashton Izzi and Tyler Gough.
In what would be something of a coup, Hunter, the M’s director of amateur scouting, said he expects the Mariners to be able to sign both Izzi and Gough.
Getting Gough where they did (in the ninth round, with pick No. 276) was a surprise for Hunter — almost as surprising as Hunter’s reaction when he learned earlier in the day that Gough was eager to sign and start his pro career.
“Wow,” Hunter said Monday afternoon. “It was a shocking one.”
“When we got to meet him at the combine, he was a special kid. … And when his agent gave me a call and said he wanted to play, we started scrambling a little bit to see if we get could make it work dollars-wise,” Hunter said. “And we were able to pull it off.”
Hunter did not disclose financial terms, but high-school draft picks typically sign for more than the value of their designated draft position.

Gough is a tough loss for the Beavers because he was thought to be a 50-50 fence sitter, but with 11 pitchers in this class, innings will be at a premium. OSU will continue to insure there is no lack of live arms in their recruiting classes.
We will likely face the same issuue next year with Paul Wilson and Trent Caraway. They will be high on the MLB Draft boards but OSU is bringing in 10 quality arms again next year. The cream will rise to the top and earning innings will be very competitive.
Treating the MLB Draft as a fact of life , OSU will plan for it, accept it and move forward with what they have.
