Great news for Caleb Hamilton! Pick #693 in 2016. Not many guys that deep make it. He didn't return for his senior year at least in part to being behind Mike Gretler, Madrigal and Grenier. I don't think he was catching at all at OSU but maybe incoming frosh Rutschman was part of the decision process also. Now he has 100% health care coverage for life (not sure if that also applies to immediate family) and is making a bit over $3000/day for as long as he sticks.

He caught a little bit here, but not much. He has worked his way up as a utility player. Awesome for him. Never thought he would make it.

I met his grandfather in Surprise one year. He was so proud of Caleb. Hope he is still around to enjoy this moment.

Hamilton never caught at Oregon State, at least not in a game. Logan Ice had that position locked down. Hamilton played each position but pitcher, catcher, and first base. In 2015, he was the shortstop after Trever Morrison went down in April. Once Grenier, Kwan, Larnach, and Madrigal showed up, though, he was seeing the field a lot less, as you might expect. Rutschman coming in meant that Rutschman was going to be taking the baton from Ice. No real spot to play, given everyone else on the field and no attrition between 2016 and 2017 besides Ice.

Sandy Leon is healthy again after being out almost a month. So, Hamilton just got sent back down on Thursday. Hamilton played in three games with the Twins. On offense, he started with a ground ball and then struck out the next two times. Hamilton got his first start just last week. In the third inning, he struck out on a pitch that was clearly outside (although the umpire called a strike a ball earlier in the at bat). In the fifth, he successfully bunted both runners over, but they were stranded after a strikeout and groundball to short. Hamilton came up in the seventh and had another outside ball called a strike. Hamilton then went down chasing one in the dirt. Hamilton seemed to play great defense, but never hit the ball in six chances. In probably good news for Hamilton's long-term outlook with the Twins, though, the Pirates just nabbed Jose Godoy from the Twins off of waivers. As such, Hamilton looks locked in as the Twins' third catcher for the time being.

In probably good news for Hamilton's long-term outlook with the Twins, though, the Pirates just nabbed Jose Godoy from the Twins off of waivers. As such, Hamilton looks locked in as the Twins' third catcher for the time being. I am sorry. I got turned around there. Leon was not the injured catcher. That was Ryan Jeffers. Leon actually was actually a catcher for the Columbus Clippers. The Twins traded Ian Hamilton for Leon. Ian Hamilton played for Wazzu from 2014-2016, which is the same span that Caleb Hamilton played for Oregon State. Ian Hamilton was the Cougars' closer in 2014 and 2015 and ace in 2016. In 2014, Joe Pistorese threw a complete game four-hitter to out-duel Ben Wetzler in game one. Andrew Moore out-dueled Tanner Chleborad in game two. Jace Fry out-dueled Jason Monda in game three. Having not previously used Ian Hamilton, Wazzu threw Ian Hamilton in the ninth to try and keep it close. Hamilton struck out Trever Morrison, induced Jeff Hendrix to ground out to short, gave up a base-hit to Andy Peterson, and induced Michael Conforto to groundout to second to end the ninth. Scott Schultz came on to close out the series-clincher. In 2015, Moore out-dueled Sean Hartnett in game one in a 5-2 win. Drew Rasmussen threw his perfect game in game two to spoil a gem by Pistorese (one earned run on five hits, and the one earned run was scored on BB, PB, SAC, and 1B). Game three may have been the best of the three. Oregon State started Travis Eckert. Wazzu's starter, Nick Leonard, threw only 11 pitches. Jeff Hendrix flew out to center and then Leonard threw eight straight balls to walk Trever Morrison and KJ Harrison. Matt Bower struck out Billy King and Michael Howard to end the threat. Morrison led off the fifth with a bunt single and Harrison doubled him home. In the sixth, Eckert hit the leadoff hitter and then gave up a double to tie things back up at one. Luke Heimlich came on in the sixth. Heimlich plunked the first batter and then retired the next 15 batters in order, holding the Cougars at bay. Ian Hamilton came on in the eighth and retired nine of the first 11. Christian Donahue led off the 11th with a base hit to center. Donahue made it to second on a failed pickoff attempt. Two batters later, Morrison hit a walk-off double to bring Donahue home and earn Oregon State the sweep. The game is noteworthy as being Heimlich's first win at Oregon State. In 2016, Eckert outpitched Trenton Dupre for the win. Ian Hamilton started game two against Jake Thompson. Ian Hamilton had a no hitter going into the seventh. (Logan Ice scored a run on a walk, balk, wild pitch, and an RBI groundout by Jack Anderson.) Nick Madrigal singled to break up the no-hitter in the seventh. Ice followed with a walk. Harrison then put Oregon State on top with a three-run shot to left. Jordan Britton replaced Eckert. Britton induced the first hitter to flyout to center. The next four batters reached on a base hit, base hit, and error on Madrigal. Mason Cerrillo then hit a grand slam to put Wazzu back on top to stay. Heimlich's start was spoiled by a dropped fly ball by Harrison and a fielding error by Nobach. The bullpen fell apart at the end, as well in a 8-3 loss. The two losses to Wazzu seemed like an aberration at the time, but the two games against the Cougars coming out the wrong way were ultimately what kept the Beavers out of the Tournament in 2016. Ian Hamilton made it to The Show for the White Sox in 2018. He looked on track to return in 2019 but got in a car crash during Spring Training. He still appeared to be on track to return in 2019 before taking a line drive to the face. He suffered multiple fractures in his face and lost multiple teeth. Ian Hamilton had multiple surgeries to correct the fractures and teeth and missed the rest of the 2019 season. Ian Hamilton started 2020 in the minors but made it back to The Show after a couple of days. He pitched in four games before getting hurt. Ian Hamilton was cut at season's end. Ian Hamilton was signed by the Twins before the beginning of the 2021 season and spent most of his time in the Minors, only pitching in one game in The Show back in June. Anyway........
