Willie Bloomquist and Arizona State have been very active in the Transfer Portal with the acquisition of four players that will impact the Sun Devil roster in 2023. Oregon will sign two transfers that should bolster the Duck fortunes in 2023. UCLA and USC each lose a front line starting pitcher.
The 8 impact transactions:
Luke Keaschall, SS, from San Francisco to Arizona State 2022: .305/.445/.502, 213 AB, 47 R, 65 H, 8 HR, 34 RBI, 30 SB. Keaschall had two outstanding years with the Dons but was playing under the radar in the WCC with a non contender. He’ll be a starter immediately at ASU.
Ross Dunn, LHP, from Florida State to Arizona State 2022: 2-4, 4.88 ERA, 48 IP, 20 BB, 77 K, .230 AVG. A high ceiling pitcher that needs to be consistent. Had an ERA of 1.42 and OBA of .166 at the half way point, then struggled in the second half. ASU is betting they can get the consistency from him.
Nick McLain, OF, from UCLA to Arizona State 2022: DNP (injury). A heralded recruit and BA Top-100 draft prospect in 2021. Switch hitter with power. Top speed and strong arm. Leaves a brother at UCLA and joins a brother at ASU.
Drake Varnado, SS, from Arkansas to Arizona State 2022: .235/.391/.294, 17 AB, 6 R, 4 H, 0 HR, 4 RBI, 1 SB. A Top-200 draft prospect coming out of HS. Has plus speed and athleticism. Great glove. Arkansas was working on swing changes with him.
Cade Winquest, RHP, from Texas-Arlington to Oregon 2022: 2-4, 5.40 ERA, 58.1 IP, 23 BB, 57 K, .251 AVG. Sits on 94, touches 97 with good array of stuff. Had 2.79 ERA on the Cape. Has struggled to harness his stuff – averaging over 5 BB/9 innings.
Towns King, UTL, from Samford to Oregon 2022: .310/.392/.548, 210 AB, 41 R, 65 H, 10 HR, 44 RBI, 5 SB. Good defender – offers position versatility. Has played 1B, 2B and all 3 OF positions. Has some power.
Carson Lambert, RHP, from Southern California to Texas A&M 2022: 6-3, 3.46 ERA, 54.2 IP, 11 BBC, 58 K, .229 AVG. Nate Yeskie gets USC’s most reliable arm. Bullpen ace that can handle heavy workload. Has 4 pitch mix and can locate.
Thatcher Hurd, RHP, from UCLA to Louisiana State 2022: 2-0, 1.06 ERA, 34 IP, 10 BB, 48 K, .138 AVG. UCLA’s heralded freshman recruit, Hurd was mostly unhittable for the first half of 2022 with a 96 mph heater and slider that produced a 56% whiff rate. A back injury shut him down in the second half of last season. A huge pickup for LSU.
