Anybody want to throw out your guesses on the day 1 starting lineup this fall? We did it last year, and I was one of the few who didn't think Greta would start day one, I got that right, but not the entire starting lineup. I'm willing to go for it again, so before hearing news from fall training camp , here's my 'way to early' guess at the Beavs starting lineup on day 1. Jelena --Post Timea--PW AJ--SF Bendu--G Talia--G I went with Jelena at Post because I believe Raegan is versatile enough to come in as the backup for both Timea and Jelena. Depending on who proves herself, my early guess is that all three of them would play approximately 25-30mpg.
I would expect Shalexxus to be the first guard off the bench. She can handle the ball, and pose a scoring threat with her 3pt ability. AJ, was the toughest decision for me. She has all the physical ability you would want at the SF position, but she needs to up her skill set and scoring ability. My biggest concern from this starting rotation may be scoring ability. Unless Bendu scores more for the Beavs, or AJ shows scoring promise, it may not work well to have both of them on the court together for long periods of time. The Beavs will need someone in addition to Talia to be a scoring threat.

Which are you putting at the PG?

I agree with your lineup. In support of Jelena starting, also factor in that Raegan may still be recovering from that shoulder surgery.

In my view, rmancarl nailed it when he wrote: "AJ, was the toughest decision for me. She has all the physical ability you would want at the SF position, but she needs to up her skill set and scoring ability."
AJ is one of those "almost there" players and a lot of our success this year will ride on the improvement of her overall game - especially point production. She possesses a lot of the attributes coaches love (length, verticality, speed) and from these attributes a greatly improved player must emerge. In a nutshell, if AJ doesn't up her game this season the Beavs are in trouble.
It's only July, so it's anybody's guess. But you don't have to be an expert to see that this year's Beavs have a roster with some strengths, but a lot of limitations. GO BEAVS!!

With her level of D1 experience, I could see Shalexxus starting over AJ. For me, it’s a toss up between the two.

beaverfever 148: I see where you're coming from - especially if you're comparing last season's AJ with what we already have seen from Shalexxus over the course other career.
My point is simply that if Shalexxus beats out AJ for a starting position that pretty much means AJ did not make the "leap" I'm hoping for, and the leap the Beavs need her to make to be a viable top 4 or 5 team in the Pac.
If Shalexxus beats out AJ for a starting position - the outlook for the season will be a bit dimmer.... GO BEAVS!!

Who is PG running the offense in this lineup with either AJ or Shalexxus?

I didn't put Shalexxus in the starting lineup because I think this team needs someone coming off the bench who can handle the ball and be a scoring threat. Although Shalexxus's points come mostly from the 3pt line, I think there has to be someone come off the bench and provide a punch. I'm not confident yet that AJ would fill that role. Maybe Adlee or Lily would be ready, but I'm not hopeful on them playing a big role next season. I would love a pleasant surprise.
Lots of questions about the PG. I think you have to role with Talia. I don't think there is a any other player on the team who is ready to fill that role. Certainly strong ball handling from the other guards would ease fears to some extent.

I just browsed the roster one more time. This team is really young. Really difficult to say how it’s all going to shake out.
I believe Talia will start at PG, with Bendu at the other guard spot. We need experience at the guard positions and they are the most experienced and clearly our two best guards. I would love to see Bendu bring more on the offensive end.
If we are depending on Aaron to provide anything, that would be a concern. After 3 years of college basketball, there isn’t really anything all that impressive.
Jelena will likely start at the 5. She has shown steady growth and improvement. Hoping she can give us 25 mins a game. Beers gets the other 15 mins, plus a few more when we go big.
Gardener becomes our new Taya. Plays a bunch of minutes at the 3 and 4 positions from day 1. Could see her getting all 40 mins on a regular basis as soon (just like Taya.)
I am not super high on AJ, but I think she gets the start at the 3 coming into the season, unless there is a change in the roster. She’s athletic, but that’s about it for me. Still really young and will bring more values as a junior and Senior.
Hansford and Blacklock comes off the bench for some spot minutes. They need to get stronger.
Noelle and the girl from Germany won’t play much in meaningful games.

I thin Beers is also playing a lot of minutes at the 4 when Jelena is in, at the 5 when she’s out. I think lineups with her in the game will be more effective than her out and moving Timea to the 4 and AJ at the 3. I think AJ will play some 2 also unless the frosh ramp quickly. I also think TvO plays PG, but I’m hoping we run less of a definitive offense where any guard can initiate the offense. This would allow Yeanyor AJ or even Timea to push the ball up instead of TvO needing to handle the ball all the time and get things started on offense. Timea does like to lead breaks based on her HS games, so we might want her to keep doing that. I don’t like TvO at PG if we need her to do a ton of full court ball handling, especially in conference, as it stresses the rest of her game and it’s not her strength.

I'm mostly in agreement with both of you. I do feel the comment saying Aaron's history "isn't really anything all that impressive" may be a little too harsh. I'm fairly impressed with her ability to shoot 40% from 3. She's been so injury ridden though, it's tough to get a read on her, or expect much from her. Timea playing 35 plus minutes may be asking a lot, but she has a good enough all around game that, if healthy, she may warrant that much playing time. I'll be surprised if Raegan only plays 15mpg. I'm expecting over 20 from her considering the Beavs lack of size.

I agree, if AJ, Bendu, or Timea get a D-board the other 4 players need to turn and blaze down court. Nothing drives me more nuts than when a fast, competent, ball player starts the ball up the floor only for a PG to stop the break to get the ball from them. Runs are sparked by fast break points which was something we struggled with last year.

I think the kid from Germany, Martha, will get some minutes, only because Rueck is going to need more capable ball handlers and PG options to run the offense. Noelle will get some minutes too, but more so for defense. Noelle actually played respectable defense this past season.
