Timing was unfortunate for her. She needed to be extra vigilant and careful. It's tough to be a pawn between two countries.

It's hard to know exactly what happened there. I for one am not inclined to take every statement from the Russian legal system at face value. Is BG guilty as charged? Who knows?
One thing for sure. Any American travelling to a country not on friendly terms with the US needs to understand that they leave their US legal rights and protections behind when they enter that country. US athletes playing in Russian leagues have traditionally benefited from the extra-governmental protection provided by their oligarch team owners. Similar to how Hollywood actors in the classic studio period benefited from the protection of the major motion picture studios and their "fixers". When the studios lost their power and influence starting in the late 40's and early 50's, the stars lost their protection and illegal misbehavior that was once covered up was now out on "front street" for everyone to see. Similarly, if the oligarch that ran BG's team lost his influence with the gangsters running Russia, her protection from real or invented misdeeds vanished. The upside of a lucrative salary far in excess of WNBA pay could make a person overlook the downside of being at the mercy of a foreign legal system that can and has, imprisoned people for any reason they choose.
