How I see it:
The PAC-12 Presidents hired the Ladies Tennis Czar to run their conference. The Tennis Czar cut a deal with Comcast, then took an arrogant approach with Direct TV. Scorched earth - the P-12 Net and DTV talked at, but not with each other. The Flamboyant Czar spent lavishly while delivering a fraction of what he promised. The PAC-12 Presidents failed to hold the Czar accountable. The Czar was indifferent to overtures from Texas and Oklahoma. Colorado and Utah didn't require any concessions. The Czar was more interested in chartered flights and facility amenities than expansion. The Czar wore out his welcome - a new leader was hired. The new Leader eagerly anticipated a financial healing when the P-12 Net negotiated the new deal with multiple carriers. The new leader awoke to the news - USC, UCLA and the huge soCal market were suddenly gone. Washington and Oregon now seek membership in the B1G Conference. Indifference. not paying attention and not taking care of business by institutional leaders led to the demise of this once great Conference.

Should have taken Texas/Oklahoma and then tried to swallow the ACC. Only path it seems to have competed TV contract-wise with Big 10 and SEC. Oregon is interesting piece in all of this. Once Knight passes away they will turn back into a mid-tier program. He really propped up their program single-handily.

The league did not want Texas because they were not agreeable to equal revenue sharing. They wanted to keep their own network and all of the money from it. The Presidents of the PAC 12 schools were never going to agree to that.

Penny wise and dollar foolish. We need San Diego State and then go after the best parts of the Big 12 hard. Get to about 18 or so. All of the ways forward are stupid.

Oklahoma and Texas wanted that, too. Washington State always opposed that. I am not sure, where the others stood, but it was a stupid position retrospectively. Penny wise and dollar foolish.

People are bitching about $33 million now. We may have gotten half of that if we allowed that to happen.

People are bitching about $33 million now. We may have gotten half of that if we allowed that to happen. From 2007-2009, which are the last numbers that I could find, The Pac-10 media deal paid an average of $17,111,625 per team. Oregon State made $17,167,040, $55,415 more than an even distribution, about $27,708 per year. The Pac-12 deal was approximately quadruple that but split evenly. If the Pac-12 deal were still in place and Oregon State still made as much money as 2007-2009, Oregon State could have cleared an approximately extra $1.22 million. By not evenly splitting media revenue, Oregon State was actually making more! Of course, Oregon State fell off after 2012, so we may have been making less than what we were making, but it basically would have moved the Pac-12 to more of a keep what you kill capitalist profit model, rather than a flat reward for unequal work communist model. The current number is $34.4 million per team per year after being $33.6 in 2020. Add to that the 2021 number was $19.8 million. Most of the delta is the idiotic seven-game schedule in 2020. The ACC and SEC did not skip a beat under COVID-19, because they each played at least 10 games. The Big Ten lost money in 2021 but not nearly as much as the Pac-12, because they played two more games each and had a bigger conference. All that to say that the unequal distribution might have worked out better for Oregon State than you are thinking, especially if the Pac-12 had diligently worked to make football, the lifeblood of the conference, a priority.

This is a ridiculous argument to compare 2009 to now. We were actually good at football then. With the PAC 12 network and not having even equal distributions, it would have been much more slanted towards larger media markets. We would have been screwed in that scenario.

We would probably still be getting 2009 $$. Stanford with their two fans were still getting more than $7 million per year. Under the new contract, they would probably be getting at least $28 million. Ridiculous. Instead of making it fair, you make the money that you earn, like the Big 12, they decided to evenly distribute. If you make more money than the Big Ten and SEC that works, but the Pac-12 did not. The have nots that set up rules that jobbed UCLA and USC, just using UCLA and USC as money piñatas cannot be upset when they leave. Also, worst case scenario, taking $6 million less per year over the past decade is going to be a drop in the bucket to what I believe that we are going to finish down without the Los Angeles schools, unless we do something drastic. Also also, Oklahoma and Texas are both members of the Pac-14+, if we had agreed to keep-what-you-kill from the get-go. And all of this is not a thing.

Stanford, despite the air crappy fan presence, still has a lot more media pull than we do. And please explain when Texas and Oklahoma joined the PAC. Oh yea, it didn’t happen because they wanted a disproportionate amount of $$. They would not have agreed to join our network, so you would have not seen any benefit from adding them.

Stanford has a very small media presence. They do offer a big media market and a rivalry with Notre Dame, though, both of which the Big Ten craves. They also have a ton of money. I have heard that Northwestern will do everything in their power, though, to keep Stanford out, unless Notre Dame comes, as well. Oklahoma and Texas wanted to keep what they brought in or at least part of what they brought in. We demanded an even split and would not negotiate. Oklahoma and Texas laughed at that and proceeded to print money, because we are idiots.
