In this 1973 film they weren't very optimistic about NYC in 2022. I was in NYC a couple months ago. As far as I could tell, nobody was eating humans. Not that I'd ever want to live in a megacity like that but, to visit - was just fine.

NY is a great, majestic, massive, vibrant city. Like any metropolis, it has problems, but it is AHELLUVALOT safer to live in NYC than a whole helluva lotta cities a tenth her size. A one hundredth her size. Give me NYC over LA, anytime. One of the world’s GREAT cities.

This is highly dependent on the burrow/neighborhood ofc. Also being rich helps solve those problems. Fun place to visit, great place to be wealthy and bad place to struggle.

Every place is a bad place to struggle. Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island are middle-class havens. And the Bronx is getting better. You better be rich to live in Manhattan. But that has always been the case.

There are affordable places to live in Manhattan. My brother-in-law lives by the foreign consulates with his fiancé, and it seems like he's not hurting for money.

So, if he's not hurting for money, that means he's fairly well-off? ie, rich? www.investopedia.com/articles/personal-finance/080916/top-10-most-expensive-cities-us.asp "New York City leads the pack as the most expensive city in the United States. The city, with a population approaching 8.4 million, also tops lists of the world’s most expensive cities. The cost of living in Manhattan is a whopping 154% higher than the national average.
The median cost of homes in the five boroughs of New York is about $662,535, compared with a national median of $293,349.34 In Manhattan, home prices easily exceed $1 million.

I suppose that it is all in definitions. But I bet that he makes low six figures. He's not Manhattan rich. If you do Manhattan right, some things can cost you a lot less than other places. Transportation is cheap, because everything is so close. You have a lot of stores selling a lot of fresh products. And you have the time to make more stuff at home, because you are not spending as much time commuting. A lot of the cost of living numbers are based on you doing the same thing in each place. And you usually adapt to act differently in a Boston, a Chicago, a New York, or a DC (I have friends in all four) than you do in an Oregon or an Arizona.
