June 21, 2006 Oregon State 5 - Rice 0
North Carolina eliminated #5 Cal State Fullerton in the early afternoon game to punch its ticket to the National Championship Series. #2 Rice was the final remaining top eight seed.
Daniel Turpen earned his second start in 2006, his first start since April 30th, against New Mexico (the fourth game of a mixed four-game set with Cal Poly and New Mexico). Turpen had passed both Brian Budrow and Anton Maxwell to go from sixth starter to fourth starter over the season. Turpen had been used exclusively as a reliever against Stanford in the Super Regional and Miami in game one of the College World Series. He started against Rice on three days' rest after throwing two no-hit innings against Miami in the 11-1 game one loss.
In the first inning, Turpen got Rice's All-American Josh Rodriguez (2nd Round, #57 overall) to ground out to Darwin Barney with a runner on third after giving up a leadoff single. Oregon State loaded the bases in the first with one out, but Tyler Graham hit into a 5-2-3 double play to end the inning.
Turpen got out of the second on a 5-4-3 inning-ending double-play. Canham walked to start the bottom half of the second, and Shea McFeely singled Canham over to third with one out. Scott Santschi struck out looking, and Barney ended the inning on a groundball to short.
Turpen induced the next three Rice hitters to hit fly balls to center, short, and center. John "Don't Call Me William" Wallace led off the bottom of the third with a single through the right side. Cole Gillespie walked. Bill Rowe singled through the left side to put Oregon State up 1-0. Graham loaded the bases after getting hit by a pitch. Canham then was hit by a pitch to put Oregon State up 2-0. Chris Kunda hit an RBI ground ball to second to put Oregon State up 3-0. McFeely struck out, and Santschi flew out to left to the end the inning.
With two outs, Rodriguez doubled. Joe Savery (1st Round, #19 overall) drew a walk. Turpen then hit the next batter to load the bases but recovered to strike out Danny Lehmann (8th Round, #272 overall) to end the threat. The next six Oregon State batters went down in order. Rice put a runner on first in the fifth but did nothing with him.
In the sixth, Rodriguez singled, but Turpen got Savery to hit into an inning-ending 6-4-3 double-play. McFeely homered to left to put Oregon State up 4-0.
In the seventh, Aaron Luna (9th Round, #275 overall) was hit by a pitch. He moved to second on a passed ball. Turpen got Lehmann and the next batter to ground out, but Luna moved over to third. Turpen was pulled in favor of Joe Paterson. Paterson walked the pinch hitter but got the leadoff man to ground out to end the inning. In the bottom half, Gillespie hit a one-out triple to right. Rowe then hit a ball to center to bring Gillespie home and put Oregon State up 5-0.
Paterson retired the final six Rice batters in order to keep Oregon State alive for an even more dramatic game the next day.
