All that money, all those facilities, all that hype and hosting the nationals on your home track, to boot.
Results, men's distance events. 1500 no finalists 3000m Steeplechase no finalists 5000m 13th 10000 8th
Results, women's distance events. 1500 no finalists 3000m Steeplechase no finalists 5000m no finalists 10000 no finalists
Team finish - Men's 25th Team finish - Women's 11th
Decent team results; but considering the advantages that program has, not really. Note that OSU with only a women's team had the same number of distance event finalists as uo's M&W teams combined.

I noticed their teams were really weak this year.
I enjoyed watching the championships just a little bit more than usual this year. Only bad part was the facility where it took place.

There was a controversy that came out last Fall within the women's program that sounded pretty awful. Perhaps word got out that you don't want to compete at uo in track. Not sure how that would make the men's team collapse so quickly though. But the same guy is in charge of both programs.
From The Oregonian last October: "Six women athletes who left the University of Oregon track and field program in recent seasons say they felt devalued as individuals and at risk for eating disorders because of the program’s data-driven approach to their weight and body fat percentages. Five of the women departed with remaining eligibility. One said she began binge-eating while at Oregon. Another says she struggles with body dysmorphia and has nightmares about competing at Hayward Field, Oregon’s iconic track stadium, while UO coaches stare at her and say: “You’re never going to be good enough.”"

This is on the front page of UO's T&F page:
Of course, they've got to throw in the gratuitous "uniform" stuff, but merging science/innovation with performance could lead to an impersonal notification that your BMI is out of whack. Maybe "everyone" does that? If I were an athlete, I'd like to think self-motivation would drive me - rather than being coerced. I remember Dick Fosbury talking about his Engineering studies helping with his high jump development and mechanics - the pinnacle of self-driven motivation.

It’s one thing for the “research” to say that super-elite women runners generally reach a certain extremely low BMI; so if you want to be super-elite, you must attain that BMI. What that reductive deduction does not take into account is the collateral stress - physical, mental and emotional - that such a training + diet regimen places on even highly conditioned and fit young athletes. And I don’t think it’s simply a matter of willpower. These are human beings, not simply flesh-machines.

What does that say about the conference as a whole?
