I was out walking around campus this AM. Lots and lots of people, excited graduates, happy families. Hope the rain holds off but at least it's cooler than when my child graduated, Reser was pretty darn hot and the field was worse.
And I'm happy this class can have a traditional graduation, unlike the class of 2021 and 2020.

do grads receive their actual degree when the cross the podium? I know it has been the tradition but also see tents by school and alphabet...where the get the actual degree? Are they even crossing?? Earlier email a friend forwarded said they were standing and being acknowledged at their seats by degree?? Only doctoral students walk the stage with names read. But, they do get their actual diploma today. Text this morning at about 9:45a said it was the typical OSU cluster eff. The live to Reser was stretched down to McAlexander??

There was only one gate open at Reser - major clusterjam getting inside. I heard the line backed up so far they blocked the processional leaving Kerr on time, so they didn't get to stadium until almost 11.
It got a bit wet. But those who waited it out, yes, they got their own degree. They had more distribution points (all the tents) so they actual handing out of diplomas could go faster than the lines in the past. Before, you had be lined up in precision order to match the way the diplomas were stacked in their bins. Now, give 'em your name, they find it and hand it to you.
Pretty great turnout considering the weather - well worth it for so many who worked so hard!

1971 was the last year actual diplomas were handed out for a long, long time. I was in the class of 1972 so we got empty diploma covers.

You got your diploma or a bill because you still owed money. Two guys next to me had a huge sigh of relief when they got a diploma.

When I got my Master's, they were handed out. But the person handing them out had dropped the last few, so I actually received the diploma for the person behind me in line. LOL
Back in 2018, my son graduated. They mailed it to him.

OSU has distributed diplomas to eligible graduates at each and every in-person commencement ceremony including 2022. I was the lead marshal for my college for a decade and a half. My job was to line up everyone in the college and walk them into the stadium and into their seats so they could get their actual diploma.

Oregon State University has handed out diplomas at Commencement now 153 times. It is a point of pride within the powers that be that this happens to this day, with north of 4 kilopeople showing up to receive their degrees this past weekend. The folks who get a diploma cover are those who owe money or whose status is otherwise not finally resolved, or, and this has happened on occasion, due to clerical error.
This year marked the first time they did not distribute them in order, one at a time, handed out by the college dean (or in recent years, an associate or assistant dean for those colleges with so many graduates they ran two or three lines so they can hand them all out before it gets dark outside...). Until 2022, students had to line up along the processional route in the prescribed order, to match the order of the diplomas in the bins backstage. This year, you could walk with your friends and sit with your friends - the only "order" imposed was that you remain with your college.

I checked with my friends and they all agreed. They didn’t call out our names either, we just lined up by department.

Huh.
Friend of mine walked in 2012. Hated it. All the fuss over the keynote speaker made the day a bit different than normal. For example, no grand processional through campus. Had to line up in Truax, which was a PITA because there was less space, and there were restrictions on what you could carry, what with the Secret Service and all, so refreshing oneself was not a simple option. Had to stay in line in Truax because, yup, he walked away with his diploma. Guy behind him was a might pissed off, though - got a piece of paper inside the cover saying, "We'll mail it to you when your check clears..." (or something to to that effect.).
Years ago, I sat as part of the committee that planned the whole dang thing. The efforts of the registrar's office (I first saw them perform when Kent Kuo ran the shop, and now under Rebecca Mathern) to get everyone's actual diploma to the field on game day is an amazing feat.

I was one of the six column marshals that led the six undergraduate columns of students into Reser in 2012 as well as in 8 other years. The column marshals and head marshals had close access to the first lady so we were the first ones through the magnetometer line going into Truax. Chris Bell was the head marshal in 2012 and was always joking around. When he and I were in the line for the magnetometer he asked the Secret Service agents whether there was going to be a dinner and film on our flight. These guys never cracked a smile - I whispered to Chris that it was time to move along now and we did. Truax had some of the longest lines that I had ever seen for restrooms as we were all locked in there for hours with the students.
You and I likely sat through some of the same meetings seeing the crazy diagrams that Chris put together to move the students across campus and into position in the stadium to receive their actual diplomas in 2012 as well as so many other years.

2012 was the only year under Chris' tenure as Marshal that the pipers didn't hit the floor of Reser within a minute (either side) of 10:30. Some level of controls were removed from the usual suspects that year...
Some day, perhaps, we could secretly share Kavinda stories.
