We have covered the in-state Beaver recruits involved in state playoff action in earlier posts, i.e., Vandenbrink, Talavs, Kennel, and Hill will all play for a state championship this weekend in Keizer. Keljo, Jones, Wilson and Reeder also made playoff appearances but did not advance to the championship game.
Up north, the Puyallup Vikings, a perennial Washington 4A power contended again in 2022. Puyallup won the South Puget Sound League title with a 17-2 record, and finished their season at 23-4. They made a strong playoff run defeating Lake Sammamish 5-1, Bothell 6-1, and Sammamish - Skyline 6-0 before losing the state championship game to Olympia HS, 7-6. Puyallup boasts two nationally ranked OSU ’25 commits with SS-2B Mason Pike (5-11, 180) and SS-3B Gage Thompson (6-1, 185).Both are freshman! Their stats for 2022:
Pike: 17 gms, 52 PA, 13-43 and .302, 2 dbl, 1 trp, 2 HR, 13 RBI, 12 R, 12K, 7 BB, 1 HBP, 5/5 SBA, Slash is .302/ .385/ ..534 919 OPS.
Thompson: 16 gms, 43 PA, 9-33 and .273, 11R, 9 RBI, 4 dbl, 1 trp, 0 HR, 1/2 SBA, 2 BB, 5 HBP, 14 K. Slash is .273/ .390/ .454 845 OPS
In Washington 2B, Toutle Lake won the District 2B title in Washington with a 12-0 record and won 21 of 22 games with the only loss to Class 3A Longview-R.A. Long HS. In the WSAA playoffs, the Ducks defeated Forks 4-0, Ilwaco 4-3 and Colfax 10-7 before losing the state final in the Tri-Cities, to Brewster 7-6. A tough loss for a Toutle Lake team that featured two PAC-12 pitching recruits in Jackson Cox, 6-1, 185 (Oregon) and Zach Swanson 6-2, 190, a 2024 OSU commit. Both guys throw in the low-mid 90's. A great 21-2 year for Toutle Lake.
In Las Vegas, Bishop Gorman HS had a terrific year, winning their 5A South Mountain League title with a 13-1 mark and completing the season at 35-7 playing nationally ranked teams in several top-tier tournaments. In the Nevada state playoffs, they defeated Palo Verde (OSU’s Paul Myro) 13-3, Reno 12-10, and 12-11 but lost the state championship game to Henderson-Basic HS. Surprisingly, 4 of Gorman's 7 losses were to Basic with Bishop Gorman taking only 1 of the 5 games they played. Bishop Gorman was ranked as high as 8th in the Perfect Game National Top-50 Poll. Gorman had 4 catchers on their star-studded roster, including Junior Anthony Marnell Jr. (6-1, 180) Marnell had a productive year – check his stats:

Riverton, Utah won the Utah 6A championship with a 25-8 record after finishing second in 6A Region-3 to Bingham. Riverton peaked in the playoffs, defeating Layton 8-7, Taylorsville 10-0, Bingham 5-2, Pleasant Grove 3-1 and then American Fork 8-3 in the final. Riverton's touted 2024 OSU commit, Sophomore Zach Edwards played 1B and pitched some in relief for the Silver Wolves, Zach's stat package:
60 App. 17-49 and .347, 15R, 19 RBI, 10 BB, 1 HBP, 7K, 4 dbl, 1 trp, 2 HR, 2 SB. Slash line is .347/ .467/ .592 OPS 1059
J. Serra Catholic in San Juan Capistrano had another banner year in southern California (CIF finalist in 2021). After a bumpy start, Coach Brett Kay and the Lions pieced it all together and ran the table, winning the coveted CIF-Southern Section title with 7 grueling playoff wins against some of the best competition California has to offer. J.Serra finished second in the rugged Trinity League, arguably the toughest league in the state. MLB scouts and college recruiters flock to see prospects at Santa Ana-Mater Dei, Bellflower-St. John Bosco, Anaheim-Servite, Orange Lutheran, Santa Margarita Catholic and SJC - J.Serra – schools that makeup the Trinity League The Lions finished 2nd in the Trinity League to Orange Lutheran with a 9-6 record, qualified for the CIF-SS playoffs and began their run through Valencia-West Ranch 4-1, Mission Viejo-Capistrano Valley (OSU's Brady Kasper) 4-2, Studio City-Harvard-Westlake 6-1, Villa Park 4-1, El Cajon-Granite Hills 5-2, and in the championship game, Sherman Oaks-Notre Dame, 3-1. J.Serra made a change in their defense and moved Tyler Gough out of the starting rotation into the closer's role and they were rolling. Blown saves were a problem early on and moving Gough to the pen gave them a strike thrower with 96 mph gas coming in to get those final 3 to 6 outs.
J.Serra Catholic HS had 4 acclaimed front-line starters with Tyler Gough 6-2, 200 ('22 OSU commit), David Horn, 6-4 and 210 with a 93 mph heater (Vanderbilt commit), Dominic Smaldino, 6-5, 210 (committed to Cal) and sophomore phenom, Matthew Champion 6’, 205 (LSU commit). During the late season and playoff run, the pitching and defense was extraordinary - they allowed 8 runs in 7 playoff games against elite competition. Gough entered games with 2 or 3 runners on base, blew fastballs by the batters, and escaped unscathed with 3 consecutive punch-outs. The defensive star at SS and with the big bat is OSU 2023 commit, Trent Caraway 6-2, 205. At 16, he's a Top-50 guy nationally and heavily scouted by MLB. J.Serra finished the year ranked 4th nationally in several prep pols.
