The PAC-12 Coaches selected 35 players to the All Conference Team and surprisingly ony 5 outfielders, all of them had good seasons and were deserving of the honor. They should have added a 6th, Oregon State's Justin Boyd. Boyd played in 58 of the 59 games, his slash line was .373/ .496/ .560 with 1056 OPS. He had 78 hits in 209 AB, 12 2b, 3 3b, 7 HR, scored 63 runs, 48 RBI, 117 TB, 49 BB, 6 HBP, and 50 K's with 23/29 SBA.
How did Boyd compare with the 5 selected? Stats were at the time of selection
Jacob Melton (OSU) - MVP .361/ .429/ .702
Wade Meckler (OSU) .354/ .456/ .487
Dylan Beavers (Cal) .292/ .429/ .639
Brock Jones (Stanford) .330/ .468/ .675
Tanner O'Tremba (UA) .351/ .450/ .583
* Justin Boyd .353/ 484/ .543
Boyd had a higher BA than Beavers, Jones and O'Tremba. Boyd had a higher OBP than all 5 that made the team. Boyd had a higher SLG% than Meckler. Defensively, Boyd made 1 error all season on 126 chances for a .992 fielding % . His speed and arm strength were equal to Melton and Beavers. He was 23/29 in SBA this vseason. This group with the exception of Wade Meckler and Boyd were all heavy hitters. Jones and Beavers hit 16 dingers and Melton hit 15. O'Tremba had 12, Boyd 7 and Meckler 2.
Compare Boyd with these members of the All Conference team.
Caleb Lomavita (Cal) .273/ .347/ .409
Jacob Tobias (ASU) .287/ .365/ .490
Will Simpson (UW) ..288/ .364/ .524
Cody Shrier (UCLA) .299/ .384/ .500
John Kasevitch (UO) .311/ .382/ .436
Brennan Milone (UO) .319/ .394/ .509
Jake Palmer (UCLA) .322/ .452/ .497
Simpson hit 11 home runs, Milone hit 10. Lomavita, Tobias and Simpson had high K:BB ratios (greater than 2:1) The coaches selected only 5 outfielders but had 4 designated hitters, 5 catchers. 5 first basemen, and 10 pitchers on the team.
If the exercise should have been to name the 35 players that performed the best and were the most productive offensively and defensively in 2022, we can answer without bias . . .
HECK YES, HE WAS OVERLOOKED !
* * * I'm not a conspiracy guy, but could maybe those coaches have just drawn the line after the 8th Beaver made that team (23% of the team were Beavs) and said, enough is enough!
