I can't challenge Lee Marvin in Paint Your Wagon, but I done alright for myself. Had me some Lattitude 33 Blood Orange IPA. Had me an old favorite, Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. (All you young un's can kiss it if you say i tain't no good anymore). Had some Makers' Mark on account that I didn't want to sift through boxes to find the good stuff. Been remodeling my house, which's been neglected for 40 years, and everything that I want is packed deeply away...for its protection, of course.
But no way was I gonna start drinkin' at 12:30 when the Beavs were (loosely) scheduled to start. Too old and I had errands to run. But I had to catch the Beavs.
Tough eleven hours (more) of baseball. Go up 2-nothin' in the first inning and by the time the bottom half was over we're down 3-2 and I shoulda been happy 'bout that 'cause the end of the second inning brings a 7-2 deficit.
f%#* this, time to get the errands done. There'll be another game later. I know, I know...the Beavs have come back from worse this season. But Good Lord, that is too much to come back from against what has turned out to be the second-best team in the Pac 12. Game over, let's go check out the Amana that so many rave about.
Got the wash machine, to be delivered later. My daughter convinced me to go to what turned out to be a grotesque east-asian "fusion" restaurant for lunch. Read: not good at any particular thing, and awful at most. I've eaten at hundreds of these...How do they survive? And what the hell were the other customers in the restaurant there for other than to try this place for the first and last time, like me?
Went home. Alright, it's somewhere between 3:30-4:00. Time to see how bad the game was and hey! Maybe we actually came back and won. What was the final score? Turned on the tube and saw a score that was 14-10...in the middle of the fifth when the game shoulda been at least wrapping up, if not over.
Watch a bit as OSU blasts away to 17-10 and now I'm thinkin' we clearly have at least the second-best team in an excellent the conference. I have more errands...bail out with victory in hand, somewhere at some time in the 8th...
I don't know the exact f%#*in' time...the Beavs are kickin' ass and I got s%#t to do. Went and got some hardware for my kid's bed, came back and start putting it together...what's the score of the game?
You are kidding me. Lost? Blew a 9 run ninth-inning lead? Blew a 1-run lead after the middle of 10? Discovered that the answer to these questions was "Yes" and decided it was time to start drinkin'. What a blow to the team; will they have the gumption to play a tough game in the night cap? The series against UCLA to end the regular season was tough and here we are again. Two teams competing against each other to determine if the winner is as good as if not better than Stanford. Both teams have been blooded.
The game has about 20 mintues to start. Time to start drinking. And I did.
If there is one city in the whole of these United States that can compete with the state of Oregon for great craft beer, it is the city of San Diego. As a beer drinker, I have been truly blessed to have started living in Oregon in the late 80s an early 90s, when Sierra Nevada Pale Ale exploded the craft beer scene and the state of Oregon followed up by setting the standard for great craft beer. Yes, great beers came from other states, including my beloved home state of California, but Oregon set the pace. I lived in Oregon for quite some time and moved to North San Diego County in 2012...
A little late, but shortly after San Diego emerged as a beer sanctuary.
The Latitude 33 was a great way to begin. I moved to North County, San Diego, about 10 years ago and as a result I have regular access to the great beers of the region and thus the world, and Latitude 33 Blood Orange IPA ranks up there with the best, far as I'm concerned. And mixing in Sierra Nevada, the original of the modern craft beers (yeah, I said that) and a great beer all on its own...Heaven has truly descended and shone upon me.
It is the blessed fate of mankind that sometimes misfortune leads to bliss. I have been through a difficult remodel that started because of a discovered water leak. I have not lived in my home for over three weeks...and I am tired of it. This being the first full day of being home, on a three-day weekend when my home is not finished, I realized how lucky I am. My house has a bit to go but is looking idyllic. Great tile. Great kitchen. Great floors. I am a lucky man...and now I will celebrate.
Tonight, in addition to the Latitude 33 and Sierra Nevada, I tasted Maker's Mark neat for the first time in quite some time and rediscovered what a fine whiskey it really is...Full flavored without too much of a bite, bit of a burn, a bit of smoke, a bit of sweetness, a bit of everything that makes a whiskey, especially a bourbon, good. This was a great re-discovery.
Somethin' else...a new friend turned me on to an old favorite (if you can name the band that had that line in their lyrics in the early 90s, without looking it up, we just might understand each other...). There are at least two posters on this board who can tell you that I have sampled some great marijuana in my time, but now it's been a while. A long while. But someone gave me some legal weed a few days ago and I indulged...wow. Mary Jane has come a long way, baby.
And so tonight's nightcap between our beloved Beavers and the hated Bruins began. How many people actually hate the Bruins for anything? They're kind of harmless and it's a great public university.
You know how the game went. Somewhere around the seventh inning, and we were down at the time, I again realized how great it is to be a part of the fan base of an excellent team in an excellent conference. I also re-realized how lucky we are to root for a team that will stand toe-to-toe with an excellent team like UCLA and contend with a team like Stanford for the conference title. Even if we lose, it will still have been a hell of a season in a hell of a conference.
And who was the best in the Pac 12 this year? Stanford? Regular-season title winners? Winner of the Pac 12 tournament? Whichever team advances the furthest in Omaha?
Such thoughts, when you concede that your team will lose. And then Melton hits a walk-off and you realize that OSU can win this tournament, after all.
Great season. Roller-coaster of a day, but OSU won and now they compete for the Pac 12 title. But what really matters from here is how well OSU does in the tourney. If I was Mitch Canham, I just might look at the team tomorrow (today) and pick the 15 guys who are most awake to play. They've played well enough to host, even through a super-regional. Time to rest up for the post-season push.
