Surfing the web on Thursday and saw that Steely Dan (Donald Fagen actually) was playing the MC. I knew that this would mean I'd miss watching UCLA game 2 but it doesn't look like I missed much. Hadn't seen a show there since my OSU days, many, many moons ago. For fans of SD, the opening act was a funk/jazz outfit called Snarky Puppy. They were the only folks under 40 in the building The show was outstanding. Fagen was in good voice (I'm convinced he's an underrated vocalist) through the entire 18 song, 100 minute set. At age 74, all the more impressive. Great 13 piece band featuring Walt Weiskopf on sax and Catherine Russell on vocals (2 saxes, trumpet, trombone, 2 guitars, bass, drums, keyboards, 3 female vocalists and DF on keyboards and melodica). Set List: Phantom Raiders Night by Night Hey Nineteen Black Friday Aja Kid Charlemagne Home at Last Green Flower Street Time Out Of Mind Babylon Sisters Green Earrings Black Cow Dirty Work Bodhisattva Keep That Same Old Feelin' (Crusaders Cover) Peg My Old School Reelin' In the Years (encore) Great evening. MC is still a great venue for a good band and 10,000+ of your closest friends.

I heard that on the radio, but had no idea Donald Fagan would still be associated with SD. I might have gone. Some of these bands just sell the name to hacks that go out on tour.

My all time favorite “band,” bar none. Fagan and Becker wrote songs I love to listen to (smart ass, witty, sardonic lyrics with a stunningly beautiful jazz/rock/pop fusion), and the musicianship and attention to detail is unparalleled. The word genius gets tossed around recklessly these days. These guys EARNED that status. Bought my first LP, “Can’t Buy a Thrill” in ‘72…… and honestly, listen to them daily. Saw them years ago at “the Gorge.” They were stupendous. RIP, Walter Becker

Thanks, Werebeaver. Fagen hasn’t changed in years. No one would EVER accuse him of being a glam rocker. 😁. If you haven’t already, check out his solo “album,” “Morph the Cat.” Brilliant. Would have been GREAT if Larry Carlton was on hand to play the lead on “Kid Charlemagne.” An all-time great lead guitar.
