I wasn't able to watch yesterday's game. I was out hiking. A friend did watch it, she claims that the Pac-12 TV announcers said that Mitch purposely hit the batter, threw it at him. And that it fired up Arizona's dugout afterwards.
I haven't seen anything in the message board threads on this. Other than mention of a quick pitch.
Can anyone comment on this?

Looked to me like a purpose pitch - didn't need to do it if it was, and boy it sure turned the game around on us.

My first comment is that those announcers couldn’t have been anymore of a homer if they were sitting in the dugout in uniform. They were 100% convinced that Mitch did it on purpose. I don’t know Mitch but I don’t think he did, his beef was with the umpire. Also from things I have heard about Mitch’s character doesn’t seem like he would throw at somebody up around the shoulder/ head area. He should be smart enough to know you let a sleeping dog lie

The logical answer would be no. Mitch was 1 strike from getting out of the inning. Anyone paying attention would have known the premium on pitch count based on how the weekend had developed. I do think Mitch got pissed and held the ball much longer than normal and it likely impacted his timing and thus location. I found the whole outraged act by AZ to be a bit much. Earlier in the series they had a guy consistently throwing pitches into the hands of our right handed hitters. Hurt one of them. Announcers continued to marvel at what movement that pitcher had on his pitches. No mention of the dangerous position he was putting our hitters in. I hope we play them in the tournament, and I hope we kick their ass. Maybe we could put Preston Jones in to score in a walk off from second base on a wild pitch.

I don't think that Mitch hit the batter on purpose, but it was the turning point in the game. The Arizona coaches or players obviously thought that Mitch threw at the batter on purpose, and they turned a big deficit into a big series victory.

He'd not be exempt from that mentality or he would have not risen through the ranks. There's a code, respect of how things are done. Different than college ball, but MC is not above sending a message. Second, MC didn't throw the pitch. Telling and executing are on two different people. Not many of those pitches are purposely thrown up, but they do tend to be overthrown and get away. Being a "homer" and being correct isn't mutually exclusive. Although in this case those "homers" made an subjective observation based on their collective experiences. There is no right or wrong. As far as I know they never stated it as fact. And, I'm sure publicly MC would laugh it off. Basically, who cares either way. It's a non issue. MV, not MC. Mitch Verburg. Too many kids named Mitch.

What caused the issue was the umpire called quick pitch when He just struck out the batter. Bad call to start with. Did Ge do it on purpose? We do not know . I would not be surprised if He did. Kind of fired up a team we were handeling. Bottom line they Hit and our pitching failed big time. Try playing in 103 weather. Arizona can. So we need to focus on Thursday. All that crap does not matter anymore.

I watched that dude win a high school baseball championship, for West Linn at Civic Stadium in the early 1980's.(IIRC, He beat Newberg 10-0 on a one hitter in the State Championship Game.) He was a sidearm wild thing as a senior in HS, just like his pro career.

The lone hit came with two outs in the top of the sixth, which would be the final inning after West Linn scored five in the bottom half of the sixth to win via the mercy rule. Williams struck out 13 in six innings. Williams was selected in the Eighth Round, #187 overall by the Padres two days later. #187 overall would be in the Sixth Round today.

I think he tossed innings in the semi, and hit a HR to beat Hermiston 6-5. If I remember he was 17-0 his senior season. It was a K or a BB, not much in between.

I have a friend who faced Mitch's brother in high school. The story goes that the brother was a right hander and threw as hard or harder than Mitch and hit my friend twice in one game. Ouch!

My brother pitched with him in the State-Metro All Star game in 1982.
