Alternate horse that just got into the race because of a scratch won with a jockey that rides on a small track in Ohio. Not much of a horse racing fan, but that was pretty awesome.

I don't know anything about race horses but the winning horse sure seemed super hyper after the race...biting at the helper pony etc. Doper? He’s not allowed to be happy after winning? They’ll test for that. That’s how the winning horse was DQ’d last year.

Won by a very late add...80-1 Odds The 20th horse in the field, first alternate, that only qualified because Ethereal was scratched yesterday. The horse ran as number 21. He was running 17th at the final stretch before some terrible jockeying by two horses in front of him. Up until yesterday, the owners were trying to get Rich Strike ready for the Peter Pan Stakes. Instead, Rich Strike will be running at the Preakness. The jockey, Sonny Leon, is the finest jockey in Youngstown, Ohio. Amazingly ridiculous. As an eternal underdog Beaver fan, I nominate Rich Strike and Leon as honorary Beavs. What a great story.

Just happened to turn it on just before the actual race. I had picked out #13 to root for because of his unlucky number and because his jockey had the name of "Jose Ortiz". He came in 4th and was a long shot as well. Thrilled for Rich Strike though.

I never watch the race but if they also had drunk celebrities foot race I’d be more into it. I’ve heard on podcasts that you can’t find drunker people in nicer clothes anywhere on earth than the Kentucky Derby.

A Kentucky Derby is on my bucket list. So is the Indy 500.

A Kentucky Derby is on my bucket list. So is the Indy 500. Unlike the podcast mentioned above, you'll find the infield crowd at the Derby far more casual and "500 like" than the grandstands of the Derby. The infield doesn't have the view, but it is a far "better" crowd of people to be around. Much more a "tailgater" atmosphere vs the "look at me" crowd in the grandstands. I'd equate the the overall Indy crowd vs let's say NASCAR similar to the grandstand vs infield at the Derby. Just depends on what you want to spend and the peeps you want to be around.

Rich Strike's jockey rode a wonderful race. So many smart angles down the stretch and the move he makes at 37 seconds, splitting the two horses in front of him without fouling, is absolutely brilliant. I'm convinced Epicenter's jockey thought he had the race won when he pulled ahead, never, ever saw Rich Strike coming and was totally shocked when Rich Stride blew past him in the final 50 yards.

I agree 100%. If you watch the jockey on the view from straightaway, you can see the moment, when Epicenter's jockey goes from I am 100% going to win to I am 100% going to lose shock and horror. Epicenter's jockey looked like he was doing everything that he could to hold off Zandon. And then Epicenter arrives on his flank, and there is nothing that he can do. If Epicenter had been more interested in just racing, rather than trying to hold off Zandon, Epicenter might have won. Messier is one of the two horses that he split. I was actively rooting for Messier to lose. Freaking Canadian horse. 10 furlongs is too long for Messier. Not enough horse.
