Oregon State's baseball program is the envy of many college coaches. The Beaver program is admired for several reasons but the one thing you hear most often is player development. The OSU coaching staffs through the years have worked hard to develop their players - they have to, they aren't located in the talent-rich metropolitan areas of southern California, Florida and Texas. OSU's players come from places like Medford, Pendleton and Puyallup. The Beavers recruit "potential", then polish it into a finished product. How many times was Coach Casy asked, "how the heck do you do that located up in the rainy northwest.?"
The OSU player development reputation has to be expanding - not only do the Beavers develop their players, but in this new era of the "transfer portal", we are developing other team's standout players as well. Take a look.
RHP Jonah Giblin is pitching for Phoenix College in Arizona's competitive JuCo conference. Giblin is the ace, with 62 IP, a 3-0 record and a 1.31 ERA. The 6-5, 218 pound Giblin has punched out 75 hitters while allowing only 9 earned runs, 21 BB and held opponents to a .192 BA. Giblin came to OSU from Bainbridge Island, WA. and spent the 2020 covid year and I think, was red-shirted in 2021 with OSU.
C Troy Claunch, a grad transfer is thriving at Texas A&M. He has taken on a leadership role with the young Aggies while putting up a .289/ .362/ .423 slash line with 11 doubles and 3 home runs. He's struck out 28 times, walked 15, been hit 5 times and has 31 RBI for the 25-14 Aggies. Troy came to OSU from Vacaville, CA. and spent 5 years in the Beaver program.
RHP Jack Washburn has been a welcome addition at Ole Miss. He's 4-2 with an ERA of 3.34 in 9 starts. He's pitched 32 1/3 innings, allowed 12 earned runs on 27 hits. He has struck out 35, walked 19 and hit 8 batters. He has held opposing hitters to a .275 BA for the 22-17 Rebels. Jack came to OSU from Webster, WI. and spent 3 years playing in the OSU program.
Csar Valero is Sacramento State's "big stick", with a slash of .300/ .359/ .620 in 150 at bats. Valero has 7 doubles, a triple and 13 home runs. He has walked 14 times and struck out 54 times with 38 RBI for the 20-19 Sac State Hornets. Cesar came to Oregon State from Okotoks, Alberta and was in the OSU program for 3 years.
With the Portal now a fixture in college athletics, schools can expect more player movement and roster change in the future. With the Portal and the Beavers continuing to have large and talented recruiting classes, transfers will become a way of life for OSU fans.
