I'm not going to excuse coaching records/success in either sport, but both VB and SB are probably two most competitive sports in the Pac 12. Both have numerous teams in the top 25 each season. I do not see OSU ever being a consistently major player for conference titles in either sport.
In VB the Pac 12 has won 17 of the 40 titles. BUT, has been the runner up another 15 times! That's 32 of 40 years of having at least one team in the championship match (5 matches were Pac12 vs Pac12). In addition, 22 other teams have been in the Final 4. THe Pac12 pretty much dominates the national scene. OSU needs to improve, but upper level of the bottom half is about all one could expect in this conference.
In SB, only (13) programs have won national titles, and (5) are from the Pac12. UCLA (13... but, 1995 vacated)), Zona (8), ASU (2), Cal (1), UW (1). Not all were won as member of the Pac12, but it goes to show how many great SB teams in the conference. That is 25 of the 40 titles, with 17 other teams losing the title series. On (12) occasions (11 of 14 years in one stretch) the title was (current) Pac12 vs Pac12. WCWS appearances is even more impressive by current Pac12 members... UCLA (33 with 22 title series), Zona (28/14), ASU (19/4), Cal (15/3), UW (14/4)... five of the top 6 with only Oklahoma slipping in with (18/7). Ucks are at (8/0), OSU (4/0... none since 2006).
Again two very difficult sports with multiple teams with great histories of successes in the Pac12. Pretty tough road to recruit and compete against.
Haaaaa I've always been a dreamer.
