Melton really broke out last year prior to the shoulder injury.
This year Baseball America says one of college baseball's top 10 breakout hitters is . . .
Justin Boyd, OF, Oregon State
Boyd last season hit .301/.395/.411 in 73 at-bats, but this season he’s taken his production to a new level as a full-time player. He’s hitting .364/.503/.509 with as many walks (29) as strikeouts (29) and 16 stolen bases in 19 tries, helping give Oregon State one of the most dynamic lineups in the country.
A dynamic lineup? I mean, who knew?

Yeah... looking back to last season's conference stats, after 15 games this team is pretty much the same. Except for SB which will be higher, maybe double (?) this team has the some of the better teams/staffs left and at a very similar slash line and a bit higher strikeout rate. The pitching must be improved and consistent to not see the same late season fade.

Last year, outside of Oregon State, the Beavers had played the #8, #10, #9, #2 and #6 best teams in the Pac-12. Then, Oregon State played #4, #7, #5, #1 and #3. Using current standings, once again outside of Oregon State, the Beavers have played the #10, #7, #5, #3 and #9 best teams in the Pac-12. Left on the schedule are #8, #6, #4, #1 and #2. The big thing that really sticks out to me is that Jacob Melton was hurt between the California series and the UCLA series. The numbers for the second half of last year were awful. Runs decreased by almost 40%. It did not help that the pitching also fell of a cliff at the same time. Runs allowed were up more than 35%. That is probably more attributable to the increase in the level of difficulty.

The loss of Melton killing our season last year cannot be overstated.
This lineup with him, Bazzana, Tanner Smith, Logan, emergent Boyd, perpetual bulldog Meckler, and the on base machine Big Country....much better than last season going into the second half of the season.

Thanks Wilky. Nice job with the numerical comparison.
