It is now legal to offer all D1 student athletes up to $5,980 annually for academic achievements. This has already opened up the flood gates at the larger Power 5 programs to offer this to their student athletes. For the smaller programs with budget deficits how will they compete with this? At some programs this alone would be a 25% scholarship for a non revenue sport. Oregon has already announced they will participate along with Washington and Colorado (for Football). How would Oregon State pay for this? This would add over 3 million to the budget. I assume for Football and Men's Basketball this will be of great concern. But would also affect the other sports during recruiting battles.
