Back in 2017, we began recruiting two prep pitchers from Stillwater, Minnesota. For two years they dominated Minnesota's large high schools and breezed to a state championship in 2019. Drew Gilbert was a 5'10", feisty left hander that threw in the low 90's (T94) and was also a mean stick in CF when he wasn't pitching. His friend Will Frisch was the other half of fte gas station, fthrowing in the mid 90's (T96) - face either one and you were seeing BB's and were in for a long afternoon. Gilbert was the Player of the Year in Minnesota, Frisch was runner up in a close vote.
Gilbert committed to Oregon State, Frisch to TCU. Seeing the coaching change, and his relationship with Casey, Bailey and Yeskie disappear, Gilbert flipped to Tennessee. Frisch made a trip west, felt reassured and stayed the Beavers. So the story goes.
Gilbert has been a gift for Tennessee. He is starting in CF for the third season, has done some occasional relief work for the Vols and is high on some MLB draft boards. Kendell Rogers from D1 Baseball weioghs in:
"It was easy to be sold on Gilbert the first time I saw him at the Round Rock Classic a couple of seasons ago. Heck, I liked him on the mound, too. But the hard-nosed slugger has blossomed into one of the nation’s premier hitters this spring. The thing I love about Gilbert is that while he has a grandiose home run trot, he’s wearing teams out for the most part – not with the home run — but with extra base hits and overall consistency. Gilbert, following the Vandy series win, is now hitting .452 with 10 doubles, two triples, three home runs and 30 RBIs. He also has an excellent eye at the plate with 17 walks and 11 strikeouts. He ranks fifth nationally in batting average and OPS."
Oregon State was recruiting him as a pitcher and he would have been in that 2019 pitching class with Frisch, Washburn, Hjerpe, Ryan Brown and Lattery.
