The last time Oregon State lost a home opener to Stanford was 2012.
Ben Wetzler v. Mark Appel.
Wetzler threw seven shutout innings. Appel was good in 6.2 shutout innings. But Gordon reached on a two-out infield single. Tyler Smith drove him home with a double down the leftfield line and Conforto drove in Smith with a single up the middle.
Wetzler should have called it a night with the 2-0 lead. Instead, he started the eighth and gave up back-to-back hits. Ryan Gorton came in and gave up a triple and double to erase the 2-0 lead. Stanford tacked on another run in the ninth and then four more unearned runs on a Cole Brocker error. 8-2 first game loss.
Jace Fry came back in game two and pitched a two-run complete game gem. (3 hits in 8.1 innings before giving up two runs on two hits in the top of the ninth.) Ryan Barnes hit Stanford's third pitch over the leftfield wall. Conforto led off the fourth with a walk. Ryan Dunn moved Conforto over with a double. Jake Rodriguez scored Conforto with a sac fly. Kavin Keyes and Joey Matthews both scored in the seventh on an error by Alex Blandino. Blandino hit a two-run double in the top of the ninth to make the final 4-2.
Dan Child threw in game three, giving up two runs (one earned) in seven innings. Matt Boyd relieved Child and threw a 1-2-3 eighth. Boyd plunked the first batter in the ninth. Tony Bryant took over for Boyd and gave up a base hit to Blandino, long fly to right, RBI groundout and RBI base hit. Bryant threw a 1-2-3 10th. In the bottom of the 10th, Matthews and Dylan Davis each singled. Conforto walked to load 'em up. Dunn hit a ball to left center to deliver Oregon State a walk-off 5-4 win.
2012 was also the last time that Oregon State swept Nevada in Reno on a one-run win and extra inning win. Oregon State also won two-of-three in Pullman.
